PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Wang Chung (ranked 1911 p4p, 3769 weight class) and Fredrico Schmico (ranked 265 p4p, 443 weight class). Chung kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Everybody Wang Chung Tonight. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Wang Chung!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Fredrico Schmico!
The judges for this bout are Jorge Garcia, Jonathan Paton and Chad Campbell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Schmico throws a leg kick

and Chung counters with a nice double leg into side control. Schmico won't be happy with that.
Schmico is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Chung is controlling him well.
Chung will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Chung is looking to take a break and control but Schmico is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Chung is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Schmico knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Chung goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Schmico rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Chung's guard! Nice work there by Schmico!
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Chung bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Schmico's guard.


That's one minute gone in the round.
Schmico preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Chung wants to pass the guard but Schmico is keeping the position.
Chung has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.
Chung prevents Schmico from getting back to his feet.
Schmico utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Schmico is looking to stand up but Chung isn't so interested in that idea.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Chung content to stall in guard here.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Chung accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Chung is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Chung stops Schmico from standing up.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Schmico tries to clinch up.
Schmico misses with a wild combination.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Schmico stuffs the takedown attempt from Chung. Chung gets slowly back to his feet.
Schmico looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Schmico throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.
Chung shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Schmico pinned against the cage. Schmico gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Schmico throws a left and a right that both miss

and Chung counters with a shoot takedown. Schmico fights it but they end up in guard.
Schmico is trying to keep Chung in close.
Chung trying to control but Schmico is working from the bottom.
Schmico wants to stand and escape but Chung is having none of it.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Chung with a flurry of punches that miss.
Schmico is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Chung is controlling him.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Chung stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Schmico swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Chung fails with the takedown.
Schmico is looking for the big counter here.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Wang Chung. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Schmico wants to slow Chung down by chopping away at his legs.
Chung throws a big counter combination but Schmico scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Wang Chung will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action.

Schmico tries to close the distance and clinch but Chung swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Schmico lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Chung circles away quickly and effectively.
Schmico shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Chung eats them both and turns towards Schmico to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.
Schmico tried to score with a low kick but Chung checks it.
Schmico steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Chung.
Schmico tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Chung paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Chung takes a shot to the body in his stride.
Chung shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Schmico as he jumps to the side.
Chung avoids the head kick by Schmico.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Schmico throws a right and a left that Chung avoids nicely.
Chung tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Schmico defends well and Chung ends up having to push Schmico into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Schmico keeps control of Chung as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Schmico tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Chung tries for a takedown. No joy.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Wang Chung. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Schmico's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Chung wants to land a leg kick but Schmico is out of range.
Schmico will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Chung moves out of range of the leg kick from Schmico.
Chung will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Schmico has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Chung swats away the attempt to clinch by Schmico.

Chung closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Schmico's guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Schmico is looking to stand up but Chung isn't so interested in that idea.
Schmico is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.
Chung advances position into side control!

Schmico is wriggling around trying to escape but Chung has hooked up a rear naked choke! Is it over??? Is it... you're damn right it is! Schmico taps out and Chung picks up the big win! Great work there by Chung!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:39 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Wang Chung!
Our winner, Wang Chung, made sure he spent some time buttering up the crowd during his post fight interview, which will no doubt bring him a few more fans.
