Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Matheus Costa! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, JJ Big! The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Daniel Cesar and Paulo Santos.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Costa tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Big swivels and escapes. Costa will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts. Big misses with a takedown attempt and Costa counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Costa. Big jumps guard but Costa stands there with Big around his waist. Big gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Big goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
Big prevents the takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Matheus Costa. That's going to take a lot out of him. Big jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Costa walks away with a smile on his face. Big gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head. Big shoots in looking for a takedown. Costa tries to sprawl out of it but Big keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Costa manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. Costa tries to close the distance and clinch up but Big swats him away and circles back towards the center. Matheus Costa seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Costa moves into the clinch successfully.
Come on Costa - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.
Costa changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Big fights it off and pushes away nicely.
Costa changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Big tries to avoid it but Costa manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Big to the ground. Big escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet. Costa is breathing heavily. Costa closes the distance and clinches up with Big, looking for a takedown. Costa pushes Big against the cage but Big circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
That's one minute gone in the round. Big fails with a takedown attempt. Costa pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Big fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. Costa tries to close the distance and clinch but Big swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Big misses with a takedown attempt - Costa sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses. Big shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Costa is looking to clinch. Costa doesn't manage to clinch there - Big circles away.
Big closes the distance and clinches up with Costa, looking for a takedown. Big pushes Costa against the cage but Costa circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Costa shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Costa showed some decent athleticism there. Big works his way to full guard. Good work.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Big working for a triangle but Costa defends it easily.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Big working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Costa doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Oh but Big is tightening it up a little... Costa has to be careful here... He's got his foot tucked under now, this looks tight! Costa reacted too slowly and this one could be over in a matter of seconds! YES! Costa taps out! nice BJJ there by Big!
