Let's get this grappling contest under way! Who will be victorious? Ramirez fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Merlin sprawls well initially but Ramirez persists and gets the takedown into half guard. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Merlin (0) vs (2) Ramirez Merlin has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance. Ramirez looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Ramirez is looking to take a break and control but Merlin is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Merlin keeping control of the leg, stopping his opponent passing to mount. Ramirez trying to control the pace. Ramirez is trying to control the action in half guard but Merlin is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Ramirez is just content to waste time from the top position. Merlin takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard. Merlin is looking for a triangle but Ramirez pushes his legs off easily.
That's one minute gone in the round. Ramirez is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions. Merlin seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now. Merlin is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. Ramirez makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Ramirez. Ramirez had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Merlin defends it easily.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Ramirez is working for submissions here. He's thrown up his legs looking for a triangle but Merlin frees his head nicely. Oh but Ramirez has switched to an armbar! Merlin is tapping furiously! Lovely submission there!
