PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Landon McGuire (ranked 300 p4p, 561 weight class) and Frank Diaz (ranked 45 p4p, 93 weight class). McGuire's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, Godsmack - When Legends Rise. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 8 - 0, fighting out of New York, Landon McGuire!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Frank Diaz!
The judges for this bout are Percy O'Donnell, Jack Bonds and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Diaz throws a poor cross that misses
and McGuire cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

It looks like Frank Diaz has been cut.

McGuire gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Diaz to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Diaz wants to control from the top but McGuire keeps moving.
McGuire keeping full guard, as Diaz tries to pass.
McGuire trying to keep a closed guard but Diaz is proving a slippery customer.

Diaz has gone for a leg lock! McGuire slips out almost immediately though and dives into Diaz's guard.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Diaz is looking for a triangle here but McGuire uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.

McGuire throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Diaz tries to bench press McGuire off him but McGuire keeps the position.

Diaz has found himself in a tricky position here. He's been working his transitions in training so let's see if he can work his way out of it.
McGuire is working Diaz over with some ground and pound from side control.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Diaz takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.
Diaz takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

McGuire wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Diaz, who protects the arm well.
McGuire trying to control the action but Diaz is working from the bottom.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Diaz tries to buck McGuire off but McGuire is having none of it.
We've been hearing good reports from McGuire's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

Diaz wants to control but McGuire postures up.

McGuire avoids the attempt from Diaz to control.
Diaz is squirming around, avoiding McGuire's attempts to control the action.
McGuire is really struggling to control Diaz but he's trying to hold on to the position.
Diaz gets back to half guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
McGuire sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Diaz defending well though.
McGuire prevents Diaz from improving his position.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
McGuire is trying to control the action in half guard but Diaz is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Diaz closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

McGuire is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Diaz can do to turn this around?

Diaz working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. McGuire doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. McGuire manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
McGuire has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

McGuire remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
McGuire working away.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
McGuire gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Diaz.
McGuire misses the shot to the body.
Diaz scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.

McGuire gets caught napping as Diaz dives in and scores a takedown. McGuire manages to retain guard.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
McGuire is trying to keep Diaz in close.

Frank Diaz showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action. And we move into the final round!


Diaz feints and as McGuire raises his hands in defense, Diaz changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
McGuire lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Diaz is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
McGuire wants to control from the top but Diaz keeps moving.

Diaz throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! McGuire escapes and throws Diaz's legs to the side, diving into side control!

McGuire throws an elbow but Diaz slips to the side and avoids it well.
Diaz tries to buck McGuire off but McGuire is having none of it.

Diaz is looking for a sweep.
Diaz sneaks back into half guard.

Diaz is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but McGuire pulls his head out easily.
Diaz is staying active underneath McGuire, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

McGuire is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
McGuire working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

McGuire is working for a submission of some sort.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. McGuire connects with a nice short shot to Diaz's temple.
McGuire is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and Diaz reverses the position - he's now on top in McGuire's guard.
Diaz wants to control from the top but McGuire keeps moving.

McGuire looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
McGuire keeping moving, preventing Diaz from controlling successfully.
Diaz advances position into side control!

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Landon McGuire.
I think McGuire has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
