Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Tommy Gavin (ranked 4634 p4p, 3027 weight class) and Jake Shields (ranked 510 p4p, 372 weight class). Shields comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Seven Nation Army kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! This should be a great matchup!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Tommy Gavin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jake Shields!
The judges for this bout are George Francis, Alan Glass and Stewart Dunkirk.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shields shoots in looking for a takedown. Gavin tries to sprawl out of it but Shields keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Gavin manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
A little feinted left hand from Gavin on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Gavin.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Gavin enables Shields to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Gavin manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Gavin has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.

Shields has control of Gavin's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Gavin regains control of the situation pretty easily.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Shields swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Gavin throws a counter high kick but Shields was just alert enough to avoid it.
Shields has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Gavin is landing a low percentage of strikes.

Shields throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
It looked like Gavin wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!
Shields tests Gavin's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Gavin changes levels and scores with a jab to the body.
Gavin throws a head kick that misses.
Shields has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Gavin lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head.
Jake Shields seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Shields shoots in for a takedown but Gavin shows good takedown defense.
Shields misses the shot to the body.
Shields misses with a takedown attempt - Gavin sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Shields shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Gavin is trying to defend but Shields finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Gavin is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Shields gets his way!

After the fight, Jake Shields was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
