PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Owen Cavo (ranked 4435 p4p, 5739 weight class) and Meguru Takayanagi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Owen Cavo!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Meguru Takayanagi!
The judges for this bout are Sam Margolis, Andrew Berry and James Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Cavo scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Takayanagi regains half guard.
Cavo is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

Cavo is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Takayanagi kicks Cavo off and gets back to his feet.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Takayanagi enables Cavo to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Takayanagi manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Cavo wants to pass the guard but Takayanagi is keeping the position.
Cavo is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Cavo has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Cavo stands up from Takayanagi's guard - Cavo perhaps looking for a knockout.

Cavo gets a takedown into half guard.

Takayanagi has one foot on Cavo's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.

Takayanagi goes for a double leg but Cavo avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Cavo continues to drive forward.
Takayanagi wants to clinch up but Cavo keeps it at a distance.
Takayanagi fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Cavo throws a shot to the body.

Cavo fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Takayanagi, pushing him back against the cage.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Cavo gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Takayanagi regains guard.

Takayanagi is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Cavo presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.

Takayanagi wants to control from the top but Cavo keeps moving.
Takayanagi is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
Takayanagi wants to pass the guard but Cavo is keeping the position.
Takayanagi is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Takayanagi seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Takayanagi's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Let's hope that Takayanagi has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Takayanagi misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Owen Cavo has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Meguru Takayanagi.

That was a close round but I would say that Owen Cavo will probably get the nod.

Cavo shoots in and bounces Takayanagi off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Takayanagi is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.

Cavo gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Takayanagi is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.

Takayanagi is trying to control the position but Cavo postures up.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Cavo closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Takayanagi pushes off and fires off an elbow that misses, before clinching up again, against the cage.

Cavo has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Takayanagi avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Cavo is working Takayanagi over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Meguru Takayanagi has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Owen Cavo is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Cavo not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Meguru Takayanagi comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Cavo has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
