PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Nat Turner (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and DJ Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). DJ Penn is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Nat Turner!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 5 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, DJ Penn!
The judges for this bout are Luis Engracia, Seu Braga and Mauricio Rocha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Turner throws a body punch but Penn moves out of range.
Penn tries to clinch but Turner moves out of range.
Penn closes the distance and lands a one-two.
Penn moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.

Turner tries to keep at a distance but Penn has taken the fight into the clinch.
Turner tries to break the clinch but Penn is controlling the position.
Turner prevents the takedown attempt.
Turner prevents the takedown attempt.
Turner has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Turner gets underhooks to prevent Penn's takedown attempt.
Nat Turner has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of DJ Penn.
Turner wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Penn has Turner pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Turner manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
Penn tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Turner just stands there and leans against the cage.

Penn breaks the clinch.
Turner swats away the attempt to clinch by Penn.
Turner throws a half hearted mid kick.
A combination from Turner does no damage.
Turner lands with an overhand left.
Turner throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Turner avoids a punch combination nicely.

Penn changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Turner looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Penn tries to advance to mount but can't.
Penn tries to advance position but instead Turner slips a leg back in to half guard.

Penn is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Penn is looking for a kimura. It's pretty deep but Turner still has the half guard so he's probably OK. Oh, Turner has exploded into a beautiful escape there and after a quick scramble, he's ended up in side control on top! Nice work!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Penn is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Penn looking for a sweep but Turner has passed into full mount! Oh no!

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Turner prevents Penn from getting the reversal.
Penn wants to control but Turner is having none of it.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Penn is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

Turner gets to his feet and calls his opponent to stand. Here come the fireworks!
Nat Turner seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Turner falls off balance throwing a combination
and Penn cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

DJ Penn dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Turner defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Penn.
Penn lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Turner circles away quickly and effectively.
Penn keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Turner misses with a combination

and Penn counters with a nice double leg into side control. Turner won't be happy with that.
Penn trying to control the position but Turner is working away.
Penn tries to move to mount but Turner blocks the move with his legs.

Penn working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Turner knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Penn on the ground.
Penn advances nicely into full mount.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Penn trying to control but Turner is having none of it.
Turner blocking the ground and pound.
Turner wants to try and get back to his feet.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Penn jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Turner is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Turner and Penn has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
Turner dodges the ground and pound from Penn.
Penn tries to advance to mount but Turner denies him.
Penn wants to control but Turner is keeping him busy.

Penn goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Turner has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Penn but great work by Turner.

Penn struggling a bit here.
Penn tries to improve position but can't.
Penn is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Penn tries to get to full guard but Turner has control of the leg.
Penn trying to hold on to Turner's head to control him but Turner postures up.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Penn is looking for a sweep. Turner is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Penn trying to control from the bottom.
Penn wants to get back to full guard.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Penn shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Turner defends it nicely.
Turner throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Penn counters with a nice leg kick.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Jab, cross, leg kick. Nice combination by Penn!
Penn connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
Turner throws a jab but it's blocked by Penn.
Penn misses with a double jab.
Turner misses with a double jab

and Penn counters by moving into the clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

DJ Penn showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!


Penn fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Turner throws a series of punches but Penn avoids them all with ease.
Penn is looking to clinch.
A jab from Penn finds it's way through Turner's defenses.
Turner throws a shot from downtown. Penn moves away and avoids it.
Penn misses with a double jab.
Penn closes the distance and lands a one-two.
Turner looks to land a combination but Penn avoids it well.
Turner tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Penn was well out of range. Poor timing from Turner.
Penn misses with a two punch combination.
A nice combination there by Penn.
Nat Turner is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Penn lands a two punch combo.
Penn lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.
Turner stalks Penn and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Penn's face. Penn staggers backwards, shaken.

Penn forces Turner back against the cage and clinches.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Penn gets control of Turner's arms and successfully pulls guard. Penn will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Penn lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Turner!

Penn throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
Penn tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Penn trying to control but Turner is having none of it.

Penn is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Turner can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Turner stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Turner throws a combination that misses

and Penn holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Penn lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.
Penn tries for a takedown but Turner manages to get underhooks.
Penn tries to score a body lock takedown but Turner shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Nat Turner has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of DJ Penn.
Turner wants to break free but Penn has control.
Turner wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.

Penn's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Penn fakes a jab and then connects with a hook.
Penn fails with the takedown.
Penn scores with a nice strike.
Turner misses with a combination
and Penn counters with a nice body shot.
Turner throws a combination that misses
and Penn counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Turner thinking.
Turner lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Penn at a distance.
Penn lands a nice looking body shot.
No joy there for Penn, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Nat Turner has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
DJ Penn is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Nat Turner is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Penn has Turner up against the cage in a clinch.

And that's the end of the fight!
DJ Penn comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Penn has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
