Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Michael Blackson! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 1 - 1, fighting out of New York, Chuck Bird! The judges for this bout are Lou da Vinci, John Roberts and Chad Campbell.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Blackson misses with a hook. Bird ducked under it nicely. Bird should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete. Blackson lands a glancing blow to the side of Bird's head. Blackson misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Bird clinches up against the cage. Blackson is pressed up against the cage. Bird has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Blackson down to the mat. Blackson avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance. Blackson fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Bird manages to avoid it. Blackson scores with a jab. Bird acknowledges it with a nod of the head. A swing and a miss from Blackson. Bird changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Blackson tries to avoid it but Bird manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Blackson to the ground. Blackson escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet. Bird tries to close the distance and clinch but Blackson swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Blackson is looking to slow Bird down with leg kicks. Bird looks gassed! The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Blackson scores with a leg kick.
Bird takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh. Bird walks into a jab. Bird on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot. Blackson looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it. Blackson turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick. Blackson throws a head kick that half lands.
It looks like Chuck Bird has been cut.
That's one minute gone in the round. Bird takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Oooh a lovely combination from Blackson sends Bird down but not out. Blackson dives into side control looking to finish. Blackson is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Bird will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already. Blackson stands up and beckons Bird to his feet. Blackson lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected. Blackson smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Bird on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere. Blackson takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away. Blackson works the jab nicely. Blackson moves into range and lands a nice leg kick. Blackson stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Bird drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles. Blackson throws a right and a left that both miss. Bird lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise. Blackson works over Bird's head and body with a nice combination. Nice sprawl there from Blackson as Bird shoots in. Michael Blackson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Chuck Bird. Blackson stuffs the takedown attempt from Bird. Bird gets slowly back to his feet. Blackson scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one. Nice takedown defense from Blackson. No joy for Bird on that attempt. Blackson pushing out the jab but it's not landing. Blackson misses with a body kick. Bird shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Blackson wants to land a leg kick but Bird is out of range.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Blackson thows a body shot but no joy. Blackson throws a leg kick but Bird moved away. Bird shoots in for a takedown but Blackson shows good takedown defense. Bird shoots in and drives through. Blackson sprawls well. Chuck Bird seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. No joy there for Blackson, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Blackson has hold of Bird's hands but Bird slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow. Blackson regains full guard. Nicely done.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Bird accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Bird loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Bird throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Blackson works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Bird scoring with punches to the head and body. Blackson wants to sweep but no luck. Bird working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. Blackson looking for a sweep. Not yet Blackson, not yet.
Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. Bird decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard. Blackson is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! Bird sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Blackson defending well though. Bird lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Michael Blackson dominated that round. The cut man is working on Chuck Bird's cut. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!
The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky. Blackson misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Bird.
Bird shoots in looking for a takedown. Blackson tries to sprawl out of it but Bird keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Blackson manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. Bird shoots in and drives through. Blackson sprawls well. Bird has a takedown stuffed. Not much technique there but it did the business. Blackson is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot. Blackson lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Bird working the body and head with strikes.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. A big left from Blackson misses. Bird looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. Bird closes the distance and clinches up with Blackson, looking for a takedown. Bird pushes Blackson against the cage but Blackson circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Nice sprawl there from Blackson as Bird shoots in. A combination from Blackson does no damage. Bird shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Blackson pinned against the cage. Blackson gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. Blackson throws a hook to the side of Bird's head but Bird sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully. Bird gets a takedown into half guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Bird looks to score some points with some ground and pound. Blackson keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound. Bird is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position. Bird tries to pass the half guard into mount. Blackson knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. Michael Blackson is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach. Blackson tries to kick Bird off but Bird keeps his base steady and stays in half guard. Bird is nestled in close to Blackson, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure. Ground and pound from Bird. Chuck Bird has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Blackson trying to hold on to Bird's head to control him but Bird postures up.
And that's the end of the fight! That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Michael Blackson. Well I reckon that's a shut out for Blackson, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent.
