PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Sambo Sam (ranked 3903 p4p, 4125 weight class) and Osazi Okon (ranked 408 p4p, 418 weight class). Well, I have no idea who's going to take this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of London, Sambo Sam!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Osazi Okon!
The judges for this bout are Ben Zyskovitsi, Matti Vanhoillinen and Arvi Lind.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sam drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.
Okon lands a body shot.
Sam keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
We've been hearing reports that Sam has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.
Okon tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and Sam counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Sam.
Sam wants to control from the top but Okon keeps moving.
Sam is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Okon wants to sweep here but Sam controlling him for the moment.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Sam missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Sam slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Okon misses with a left hand
and Sam counters with a series of strikes. Okon will be more careful next time no doubt.
Okon misses with a looping right.
Sam tries to clinch up.
Okon paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.
Okon lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.
Okon getting the better of the striking in that exchange.
Osazi Okon is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
A looping hook to the body misses from Okon. Sam does a little dance to reset his feet.
Okon connects with a body shot.
Sam misses with a double jab.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Okon scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Sam doesn't seem bothered though.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Okon connects with a right hand. Sam shakes it off.
Okon missing with a left hand there. Sam was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Sam misses with a body shot.
Okon looks like he wants to counter punch here.
Okon has done a lot of speed work in the buildup to this fight.
Sam walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.
Sam on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot.
Okon takes a swing at Sam's ribcage but misses.
Sam takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Okon tries to clinch up but Sam circles away and keeps his distance.

Okon cracks a nice hook into Sam's ribs.

Okon drives through and clinches with Sam against the cage.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
A short uppercut from Okon.
Okon throws a hook to the body. More of an arm punch but it's all scoring with the judges.
Sam doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Okon lands a body punch in the clinch.
Sam is breathing heavily.
Okon is pushing Sam up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.
Sam fails to pull guard.
Sam's head jolts backwards as he takes an uppercut right on the button!
Okon pushes Sam back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.
Okon is clearly stalling here... Pick up the pace son.
Okon lands with a short head shot on the inside.
Sam is trying to pull guard but Okon has him pressed against the cage.
Sam jumps guard but Okon stands there with Sam around his waist. Sam gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Sambo Sam. That's going to take a lot out of him.
With the fighters clinched against the cage, Okon creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut.
Okon slows down the pace here.
Okon throws a blind hook that connects with the side of Sams head.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Both guys are working to get underhooks.
Sam jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Okon walks away with a smile on his face. Sam gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Okon wants to clinch up but Sam keeps it at a distance.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Okon misses with a hook

so Sam counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Sam preventing the sweep.
Okon has his hands on Sam's head, controlling the position.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Sam throws a big elbow that misses.
Sam pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Okon is keeping the position for now.
Okon is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Osazi Okon dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

Okon scores with a nice strike.
Sambo Sam is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Sam takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.
Sam misses with a body shot.
Sam uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Okon.
Okon moves into range and connects with a jab.
Sam tries to clinch there but Okon circles away.
Sloppy strikes from Sam. Those never looked like landing.
Okon has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Sam swats away the attempt to clinch by Okon.
Okon lands with a hook. Sam tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Sam ducks under a wild hook from Okon.

Sam drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Sam wants to control from the top but Okon keeps moving.
Sam working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Okon's head.
Okon really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Sam. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Sam is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Okon utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Sam trying to control but Okon is working from the bottom.
Sam postures up in Okon's guard and throws a big left but Okon blocks it.
Sam sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Sam has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Sam trying to control the position from guard on top but Okon is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Sam sitting in guard, not really doing much.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Sam takes a swing at Okon's ribcage but misses.
Okon jabs Sam to the body, keeping him at a distance.
A swing and a miss from Okon.
Okon pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
Osazi Okon seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Okon is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot.
Sam fails with an attempt to clinch.

Sam shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Okon looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Sam trying to control the position from guard on top but Okon is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Sam working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Sam advances position into side control!

Sam working away.
Okon parries the strikes from Sam easily there. Sam is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Okon to escape.
Okon is trying to control Sam's posture but Sam avoids it.

Sam is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Okon has escaped the position, nice work there.

Sam tries for a kimura but Okon is defending well.
Okon can't do much from the bottom here.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Okon looks to move to half guard but instead Sam has passed into mount! Damn!
Sam looking to ground and pound but Okon is blocking nicely.
Poor strikes thrown by Sam there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!
Sam is landing with some decent strikes but Okon is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.

Sam goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Okon turns into him and now he's in Sam's guard.
Sam utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Sambo Sam will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

Good exchange - Okon coming out on top.

Okon gets a clinch.
Sam fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Okon scores with a nice hook to the head.
Okon controlling the action here for a moment.
Sam takes a shot to the head.
Okon holding his opponent close, against the cage.
Okon is pressed up against the cage. Sam has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Okon down to the mat. Okon avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Okon scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard.
Okon tries to clinch but Sam is having none of it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Sam slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Okon is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Sam's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Well, if Sam is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Okon is in trouble now - Sam has advanced to mount!

Okon defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Sam.
Sam misses with a head shot.
BOOM! Sam connects with a massive shot to the dome!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Sam lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.
Sam moves to the back.
What can Okon do to escape this position? He's going to have to figure it out pretty quick if he wants to stay in the fight!
Sambo Sam overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Okon won't enjoy being in this position. Sam looking for the choke. Oh... he's slipped the arm under the neck - Okon is tapping - it's over boys! Sam picks up the submission victory!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:42 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Sambo Sam!
