PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Soren Hansen (ranked 1815 p4p, 2547 weight class) and Seth Smith (ranked 227 p4p, 295 weight class). Hansen comes to the cage accompanied by If I had a heart. Seth Smith will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Soren Hansen! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Seth Smith! The judges for this bout are Robert Douchet, Dillan Fox and Elvis Blanc.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Smith fails to land the takedown. Seth Smith seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Hansen clinches up against the cage. Smith blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
Smith jumps guard but Hansen stands there with Smith around his waist. Smith gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Smith can't get the takedown.
Soren Hansen has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Seth Smith. Hansen misses with the head strike.
Smith is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though. Smith blocking some punches.
Smith is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Hansen can't fight it off and eventually Smith manages to take the fight to the floor. Hansen looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard. Hansen has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Smith trying to control but Hansen is working from the bottom.
That's one minute gone in the round. Smith lands a couple of decent looking shots. Smith looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights. Smith stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Hansen swivels though and keeps the full guard. Hansen looking for a sweep. Not yet Hansen, not yet. Smith missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. Hansen has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Smith has passed into side control.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Hansen dodges the ground and pound from Smith. Hansen knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Smith on the ground. Smith trying to control the position but Hansen is working away. Smith tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Smith has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought! Smith tries for a kimura but Hansen is defending well. Hansen is looking to regain half guard here but Smith keeps moving and retains side control.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Hansen is not content to let Smith control the position. Hansen is looking to reverse the position. Smith wants to control but Hansen is keeping him busy. Hansen parries the strikes from Smith easily there. Smith is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Hansen to escape.
Hansen has improved his flexibility recently so we will have to see if he can use that to his advantage. Hansen tries to buck Smith off but Smith is having none of it. Smith sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Hansen is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. Hansen being controlled for a moment. The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up. Smith looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything. Hansen can't do much from the bottom here. Hansen is trying to improve his position. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Smith tries to move into full mount but can't pass Hansen's legs. And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
Seth Smith dominated that round. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.
Hansen has closed the distance and engaged Smith in a clinch.
A head punch blocked on the inside by Smith. Smith on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
Smith drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Hansen gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Hansen stops a takedown attempt from Smith.
Hansen tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage. Smith wants a takedown.

Hansen drives through with a takedown into Smith's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position. Hansen cracks Smith with a solid left hand.
That's one minute gone in the round. Hansen is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound. Smith throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Hansen working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound. Smith is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Hansen content to stall in guard here. Hansen trying to control the position from guard on top but Smith is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Hansen not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. Hansen postures up in Smith's guard and throws a big left but Smith blocks it. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Smith escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Hansen gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Hansen looking to improve position, pressing down on Smith's thigh with his hand. Smith seems to be working to lock up a guilotine though... is Hansen paying attention? Apparently not! He's locked it up tight! Hansen's face has turned purple! Will he tap? Will he! YES! He's tapped! Smith picked his opening and made it count! Great finish!
