And in the blue corner, fighting out of Los Angeles, with a TWGC record of 10 wins and 11 losses; Joe Tidd! The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Felipe Paraventi and Luis Engracia.
The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Tidd drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Mata (0) vs (2) Tidd Tidd passes easily into side control. Nice work. Score +3 for passing guard: Mata (0) vs (5) Tidd You can see the frustration on Mata's face as Tidd controls the position. Mata prevents Tidd from improving position. Mata tries to get back to half guard but can't. Mata seems a little lost for a moment, as Tidd dominates the positioning. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Let's see whether that pays dividends! Tidd is looking to work his way around to Mata's back. He needs to be careful though, as he's in danger of losing this dominant position. Tidd moves to the back. Score +3 for taking back: Mata (0) vs (10) Tidd Tidd trying to secure his dominant position for a moment - making sure Mata doesn't escape. Mata's coaches at Tran MMA Gym have been working on his defensive grappling in preparation for this fight so let's see if he can get out of this tricky position. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Let's hope that Tidd has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight. Tidd keeps control of the position as Mata tries to break free.
What can Mata do to escape this position? He's going to have to figure it out pretty quick if he wants to stay in the fight!

Well, with Tidd on his back, surely it's only a matter of time before Mata is tapping out... Can he escape the position? It looks like Tidd might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
