PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Richard Ramirez (ranked 1437 p4p, 481 weight class) and Punchy Cartwright (ranked 202 p4p, 80 weight class). Ramirez comes into the arena with Get Lucky blaring out of the sound system. Cartwright has chosen A Pound of Flesh as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Man, I cannot wait for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 11 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Richard Ramirez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Punchy Cartwright!
The judges for this bout are William Gold, James Atkins and Richard Clark.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cartwright fails with an attempt to clinch.
Punchy Cartwright seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Cartwright fails to land with a series of punches.
Ramirez misses with a takedown attempt - Cartwright sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Ramirez swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Ramirez tries to score a power double leg takedown but Cartwright sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Ramirez somewhat.
Cartwright tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Cartwright scores with the left hand. Ramirez knows he should have avoided that one.
Cartwright lands a nice shot to the body.

Ramirez throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Cartwright sees it coming and avoids it easily.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Ramirez is defended easily by Cartwright.

Ramirez tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Cartwright was well out of range. Poor timing from Ramirez.

Ramirez throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Cartwright tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Ramirez is in Cartwright's guard.

Cartwright has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Ramirez has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.
Cartwright blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
Cartwright tries to break the clinch but Ramirez is controlling the position.

Cartwright has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Ramirez is landing a low percentage of strikes.

Cartwright has managed to clinch.
Cartwright is looking to break free of the clinch but Ramirez has double underhooks.

Cartwright's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Cartwright looks to score with a jab to the body but Ramirez is just out of range.
Ramirez appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
Ramirez tries for a takedown but Cartwright sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Cartwright pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Ramirez changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Cartwright works the jab nicely.
Ramirez throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Cartwright throws a leg kick but Ramirez sees it coming and moves out of range.
Cartwright circles away from the clinch attempt.
A little jabbing left from Cartwright on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.

Ramirez prevents Cartwright from breaking the clinch.

Cartwright breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Ramirez gets tackled into the cage by Cartwright. Cartwright maintains the clinch.
Ramirez has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Cartwright avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
I was talking to Ramirez's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.
Ramirez has Cartwright pressed against the cage, preventing Cartwright from circling away and getting back to striking at range.

Ramirez is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Cartwright can't fight it off and eventually Ramirez manages to take the fight to the floor. Cartwright looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Cartwright has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Ramirez is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.

Cartwright breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Cartwright connects with the punch.
Cartwright is looking to clinch.
Cartwright dodges the punch combination from Ramirez.
Cartwright scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Ramirez doesn't seem bothered though.
Cartwright works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.
Cartwright tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Ramirez drops down looking for a counter takedown but Cartwright sprawls and moves away.
Cartwright has used his reach advantage pretty well so far tonight.
Ramirez avoids a punch combination nicely.
Ramirez moves to clinch but Cartwright breaks away
and Cartwright counters with a leg kick.
Ramirez misses the shot to the body.
Ramirez misses with a wild body shot.
Cartwright changes levels and scores with a jab to the body.
Cartwright tries to close the distance and clinch but Ramirez swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Cartwright gets caught napping as Ramirez dives in and scores a takedown. Cartwright manages to retain guard.

The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Cartwright lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage.

Cartwright escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
The fight stays on the outside here - Ramirez looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Cartwright keeps the fight on the outside.
Ramirez goes for a double leg but Cartwright avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Cartwright continues to drive forward.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Ramirez misses with a shot to the kidneys.

Cartwright escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Cartwright moves out of range as Ramirez strikes.

Ramirez clinches.
Ramirez looking for a takedown.

Cartwright breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Cartwright scores with a jab. Ramirez acknowledges it with a nod of the head.
Ramirez gets cracked there but stands up to it.
Cartwright doesn't manage to clinch there - Ramirez circles away.
Ramirez appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
Ramirez shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Cartwright pinned against the cage. Cartwright gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Ramirez fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Cartwright, pushing him back against the cage.
The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Cartwright tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and Ramirez counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Punchy Cartwright dominated that round.
That's time! Back to the action!

Ramirez looks for a takedown but Cartwright sprawls well.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Cartwright! But no joy.
Ramirez blocks a head kick by Cartwright.
Cartwright tries to move into range but Ramirez moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.
Cartwright looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.
Cartwright tries to clinch up.
Cartwright lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Cartwright bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Ramirez's head.
Ramirez tries for a takedown but Cartwright sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Cartwright drops Ramirez with a hook right on the temple. He thinks about going to the ground but Ramirez looks back up at him and smiles so Cartwright waves him back to his feet - he obviously thinks he can knock him out after that shot landed.

Ramirez is rocked!
This has been an exciting period of action!
Ramirez takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
Oh Ramirez is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Cartwright knocks out Ramirez with a massive right hand! The ref tackles Cartwright before he can follow up with any more strikes and that's it everyone. Cartwright picks up the big W with a huge KO!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:40 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Punchy Cartwright!
After winning the bout, Punchy Cartwright thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
Richard Ramirez was interviewed post fight and said 'I'll end you!'.
