PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Pepetinho Perez (ranked 24608 p4p, 24646 weight class) and Reginald James (ranked 465 p4p, 491 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Pepetinho Perez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of New York, Reginald James!
The judges for this bout are Steve Montenegro, Chad Campbell and John Kavanagh.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
James throws a body kick despite being completely out of range

and Perez counters with a head kick that drops James to the mat! James scrambles across the canvas and gets back to his feet, still wobbly!

James clinches with his opponent.
A frustrated look appears on Perez's face as he tries to break the clinch.
James is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Perez pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Perez just leaning against James, taking a breather.

James escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Perez throws a head kick that misses.
Perez slips a jab and a cross from James.

Perez moves into the clinch.
James lands a glancing elbow in the clinch.
Perez misses with a punch on the inside.
James blocks an elbow strike from Perez.
Perez is pressed up against the cage. James has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Perez down to the mat. Perez avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
This has been an exciting period of action!
James misses with an attempted mid kick.

James shoots for a double leg takedown but Perez sprawls well. He's pushed James's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Pepetinho Perez has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Reginald James.
James tries to bum rush Perez with a series of wild strikes but Perez uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
James jabbing away but nothing is landing.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from James is defended easily by Perez.
James lands with a good body shot.
Perez tries to clinch up but James circles away and keeps his distance.
James tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.

Perez clinches up with James and pushes him back against the cage.
Perez comes over the top with an elbow. That landed flush.

James breaks from the clinch.
James throws a body shot but no joy.
James blocks a head kick by Perez.
James shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Perez but Perez pushes him off and we're back to square one.
James lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Perez backs up against the cage.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
James looks to land a left hand but Perez moved out of range nicely.

and Perez counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

James trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!
James really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Perez. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

James looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Perez decides to stand back up.

Perez pushes James up against the cage in a clinch.

James breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
James is trying to break the clinch but Perez is controlling him.

James shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Perez as he jumps to the side.
James tries to clinch but Perez is having none of it.

Perez escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
James works the jab nicely.

James throws a wild body kick that Perez sees coming a mile off.
James shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Perez sprawls well. Perez wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. James gets slowly back to his feet.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Pepetinho Perez dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

James throws the kick towards the body but Perez avoids it.

James will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Perez is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that James can do to turn this around?

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Perez seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter.
James is breathing heavily.
James throws a combination that misses

and Perez counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Perez.

Perez doesn't manage to clinch there - James circles away.
James is trying to avoid his opponent's strikes and get into the clinch.

And an attempted straight right on the counter from James! But no joy.

James has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Perez after a bit of a struggle.

That was a close second round but I would say that Pepetinho Perez will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

Reginald James comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
