TWGC 37 (155lbs, D1): New York Qualifier - Round 1 PBP Commentary |
This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the lightweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Los Angeles, with a TWGC record of 9 wins and 2 losses; Jorgen Kruth! And in the blue corner, fighting out of New York, with a TWGC record of 25 wins and 11 losses; John Lee! The judges for this bout are Jorge Garcia, John Kavanagh and John Roberts.
The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Lee closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Kruth did well to prevent Lee getting side control. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Kruth (0) vs (2) Lee Kruth wants to control but Lee is keeping busy and won't allow it. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Lee wants to pass the guard but Kruth is defending well. Kruth actively working from the bottom here. Kruth is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Lee works his way into full mount! Score +3 for passing guard: Kruth (0) vs (5) Lee Kruth tries to lock up and control but Lee gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Kruth is in all sorts of trouble here.
That's one minute gone in the round. Lee controlling his opponent. Kruth reaches up to try and control the position but Lee seems to have an arm triangle now! Uh oh! Kruth rolls and tries to escape and now Lee has his back!

Lee is trying to stick to Kruth's back but Kruth is turning into Lee. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Lee's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Kruth. Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Kruth (2) vs (8) Lee Kruth seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. We've been hearing good reports from Kruth's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Lee keeping full guard, as Kruth tries to pass. Lee has control of Kruth's left arm, preventing Kruth from doing any damage. Kruth trying to control the position from guard on top but Lee is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Kruth trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Lee keeping moving, preventing Kruth from controlling successfully. Kruth has gone for a leg lock! Lee slips out almost immediately though and dives into Kruth's guard. Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Kruth (2) vs (10) Lee Lee trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Kruth is trying to hold Lee in close to prevent damage but Lee has managed to pass into half guard.
Lee perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there. Lee is thwarting Kruth's attempts to control the position.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Kruth looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Lee trying to control the pace. Kruth wants to sweep but Lee has passed to side control! Score +3 for passing guard: Kruth (2) vs (13) Lee Kruth is trying to get back to half guard. Lee controlling the position from side mount.
That's five minutes gone in the round. Kruth is trying to improve his position. Kruth is trying to control Lee's posture but Lee avoids it. Kruth is in a bad position, trying to hold on for dear life but he is really struggling to maintain any sort of control. Lee in side control, just content to control the action for now.
That's six minutes gone in the round. Kruth tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Lee presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount! Score +2 for reaching mount: Kruth (2) vs (15) Lee Kruth is trying to escape the mount.

That's seven minutes gone in the round. Lee not allowing Kruth to control his hands. So, who will make the next big move? In this position it could be crucial.

That's eight minutes gone in the round. Lee is controlling his opponent, waiting for an opportunity to finish. Kruth turns into Lee and is now in his guard.

That's nine minutes gone in the round. Kruth is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Lee sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Kruth's guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Kruth is looking to improve his position.

That's ten minutes gone in the round. Kruth tries to get to full guard but Lee has control of the leg. Lee sitting and controlling from the half guard. Kruth trying to keep hold of his opponent's head but Lee manages to pass to mount!
Score +3 for passing guard: Kruth (4) vs (26) Lee Lee tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
That's eleven minutes gone in the round. Kruth is trying to escape the mount.
Kruth wants to control but Lee is having none of it. Kruth can't escape the position.
Kruth slips a leg in and gets back to half guard. Kruth wants to control but Lee is keeping busy.
That's twelve minutes gone in the round. Kruth wants to improve his position but Lee is controlling well.
Kruth gets back to full guard.
Kruth working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Lee doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Lee manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Kruth will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Lee seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. Kruth is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
That's thirteen minutes gone in the round. Kruth is trying to control the position but Lee postures up. Lee passes Kruth's left leg - he's now in half guard. Kruth slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work. Lee tries to free his leg and advance position but Kruth is retaining full guard. Kruth looking for a guillotine here but Lee defends easily.
Lee's corner is telling him to maintain position.
That's fourteen minutes gone in the round. Let's hope that Lee has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight. Lee wants to pass the guard but Kruth is keeping the position. Lee won't allow Kruth to sweep him here. Kruth looking to control but Lee passes into half guard.
Kruth looking for submissions off his back. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Lee tries to pass the half guard into mount. Kruth knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
