Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Christophe Pouliot! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Willie Jones! The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, Yves DeLean and Alec Ball.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Pouliot walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush. Jones moves into the clinch. Jones has Pouliot pressed against the cage.
Jones tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage. A right handed body shot lands from Jones.
The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Pouliot takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Jones is looking to pass into half guard but Pouliot pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Pouliot is in guard.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Jones can do anything to dispel that myth. A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Jones holds on and takes a little breather. Pouliot lands a couple of digs.
That's one minute gone in the round. Jones is looking to stand up but Pouliot isn't so interested in that idea. Pouliot postures up in Jones's guard and throws a big left but Jones blocks it. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Pouliot accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Jones keeping moving, preventing Pouliot from controlling successfully. Pouliot postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Pouliot forces his way into half guard. Jones wants to get back to his feet.
Pouliot has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Jones keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
That's two minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Pouliot seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Jones does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Pouliot lands strikes from half guard. Jones has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Pouliot is working away from the top position though. Pouliot prevents Jones from standing back up.
Pouliot working over Jones with some ground and pound. Jones looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable. Jones is trying to maintain the position but Pouliot is very close to passing his half guard. Jones avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Pouliot. Jones on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound. Jones really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Pouliot. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Pouliot scoring with strikes to the body and head.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Nice strikes from Pouliot there. Pouliot is keen to just control but Jones is a slippery customer. Pouliot throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. Pouliot working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that. Jones taking some punishment here, with Pouliot in his half guard. Pouliot lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt. Pouliot seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime. Pouliot looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Jones with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. Jones is positioning himself well to prevent Pouliot advancing to mount.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Pouliot not landing any meaningful shots this time. Pouliot winds up and cracks Jones with a swinging punch to the side of the head. Pouliot passes to full mount! Pouliot scoring with strikes but Jones is staying in there. Jones is in all sorts of trouble here.
Jones is bucking up trying to escape but Pouliot cracks him with another couple of good strikes. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Oooooh, big shot lands for Pouliot! Jones is hurt baaadly! Pouliot is firing away with more strikes - Jones is covering up... the ref is warning him to do something. He's just covering up though still and the ref has to step in to end the fight! This one is all over!
