Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Mike Carpenter (ranked 2281 p4p, 4067 weight class) and James Shortman (ranked 93 p4p, 152 weight class). Both fighters really staring each other down here, as James Shortman enters the cage!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 14 - 19 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Mike Carpenter!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 15 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, James Shortman!
The judges for this bout are Albert Achterberg, Nard Betker and Patrick Alders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shortman throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Carpenter's waist but Carpenter gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Shortman off to one side.

Carpenter closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

Carpenter wants the takedown. Shortman is fighting it off but Carpenter persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Shortman's guard against the cage.

Carpenter slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Shortman has his foot on Carpenter's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Carpenter works his way back into a safe position though.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Shortman has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Carpenter can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Carpenter content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.

Shortman is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Carpenter pulls his head out easily.
We've been hearing that Carpenter has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Carpenter in particular looking to stall.

Carpenter looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Carpenter is taking a breather. Shortman says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Shortman shoots and misses

and Carpenter counters with a big uppercut that knocks Shortman off his feet! Carpenter dives into side control looking to finish!

It looks like James Shortman has been cut.
Mike Carpenter overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Carpenter happy to just control the position for now.
Shortman tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Carpenter wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Shortman takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
Shortman manages to get back to half guard.

Carpenter drops an elbow to the side of Shortman's head.

Shortman is working on a guillotine. He's managed to get to full guard and he's really squeezing tight! Carpenter is tapping! Great win for Shortman!
