PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight kickboxing rules bout between Zico Verhoeven (ranked 5913 p4p, 4014 weight class) and Kong Wu (ranked 546 p4p, 426 weight class). The key to victory for Zico Verhoeven has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Zico Verhoeven!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Kong Wu!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Percy O'Donnell and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Verhoeven lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Kong Wu seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Verhoeven throws a right and a left that Wu avoids nicely.
Verhoeven uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Wu.
Wu throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean.
Verhoeven tries to clinch there but Wu circles away.
Wu takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.

It looks like Kong Wu has been cut.
Wu ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Verhoeven moves away.
Wu doesn't manage to clinch there - Verhoeven circles away.

Wu is trying to stall.

Verhoeven breaks from the clinch.
Verhoeven throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Verhoeven tries to bum rush Wu with a series of wild strikes but Wu uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Wu scores with a nice right hand.

Wu closes the distance and clinches.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Verhoeven manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Wu will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Wu tries to clinch up against the ropes, rushing in to close the distance. Verhoeven manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Wu throws out a counter right but Verhoeven avoids it with no problem.

And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Zico Verhoeven will probably get the nod.
The cut man is working on Kong Wu's cut.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Verhoeven is looking to control Wu's arms but Wu gets an underhook and turns him. Now Verhoeven has his back to the ropes.
Wu pushes off and fires off an elbow that misses, before clinching up again, against the ropes.

Verhoeven manages to break the clinch.
Wu throws a series of punches but Verhoeven moves out of range.
Wu will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Wu misses with a head kick.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Wu walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Verhoeven checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.

Wu has had enough of the clinch but Verhoeven keeps him there for the moment.
Verhoeven wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Wu is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the ropes.
Wu throws a blind hook that connects with the side of Verhoevens head.
Wu makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut.
Verhoeven has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Wu can't find room to land a body shot as Verhoeven controls the action.

Wu goes for a body shot but it's blocked.

Verhoeven ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.

Verhoeven lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.

Verhoeven cracks Wu with a right hand to the side of the head.
Donk. Verhoeven catches Wu right on the button with a cross.

Wu is rocked!
Wu ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.
Wu is still on wobbly legs! Can Verhoeven finish him?
Verhoeven closes the distance and catches Wu with a lead hook that drops him to the canvas! Wu is clearly dazed and struggling here! 3,4,5,6,7 and Wu is up to his feet but the referee has called it off! Wu is still far too wobbly and he's not going to allow the fight to continue! Verhoeven takes it!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:55 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Punch). Zico Verhoeven!
After the fight, Zico Verhoeven was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
