This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the super heavyweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of New York, with a TWGC record of 2 wins and 2 losses; Mason Island! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Montreal, with a TWGC record of 0 wins and 0 losses; Tuur Carlier! The judges for this bout are Leandro Rodrigues, Mauricio Rocha and Matheus Silva.
The official calls the fighters to the middle and the contest is under way. Carlier closes the distance and clinches. Island has Carlier pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Island pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Carlier tumbling to the mat - Island dives into Carlier's guard. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Island (2) vs (0) Carlier Island drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Carlier dives on top into guard. Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Island (2) vs (2) Carlier Island will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Island wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now. Carlier wants to pass the guard but Island is keeping the position. Carlier trying to control the position from guard on top but Island is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Island holds on and takes a little breather. Carlier is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Island is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Island has escaped and now he's on top! That's one minute gone in the round. Carlier is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Island defends well. Carlier working for a triangle but Island defends it easily.
Island controls the pace of the fight for a moment. Island seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Carlier for as long as he can get away with.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Island has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent. Island continues to stall. Carlier pushes a forearm under Island's chin to create some space. He's escaped his hips and pivoted quickly for an armbar! Can he extend the arm? Yes, Island is tapping out! Damn, that was fast!
