This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the super heavyweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of London, with a TWGC record of 6 wins and 6 losses; Jari Laitila! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Las Vegas, with a TWGC record of 13 wins and 19 losses; Edwin Lucan!
The judges for this bout are Paulo Santos, Matheus Silva and Thiago Cunha.
The fighters connect hands in the middle of the mat and we are under way.
Laitila darts in and clinches Lucan up against the cage.
Laitila tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Lucan just stands there and leans against the cage.
Lucan is trying to trip Laitila. He has hold of a leg but Laitila is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Lucan persists though and gets the takedown into guard. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Laitila (0) vs (2) Lucan
Laitila seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission.

In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Lucan working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.
Lucan drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Laitila manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Lucan has Laitila in his guard. Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Laitila (2) vs (2) Lucan

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Lucan holds on and takes a little breather.

Lucan is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Laitila passes Lucan's left leg - he's now in half guard.

Lucan might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Laitila haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Laitila is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Lucan is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment.
Laitila is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Lucan defends it well.
Lucan is not content to let Laitila control the position.

Lucan has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Laitila is working away from the top position though.
