And in the blue corner, fighting out of London, with a TWGC record of 7 wins and 3 losses; Ronaldo Gomes! The judges for this bout are Trevor Gratis, Robert Douchet and William Peck.
The official calls the fighters to the middle and the contest is under way. Smyth shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Gomes is trying to defend but Smyth finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Smyth (2) vs (0) Gomes Smyth moves into full mount! Gomes won't be happy about that! Gomes has found himself in a tricky position here. He's been working his transitions in training so let's see if he can work his way out of it. Smyth is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Gomes is just riding it out for now. Smyth eventually gives up the hold. Smyth wants to pass to mount but Gomes is defending the position.

Gomes is looking for a sweep. Smyth is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Smyth is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Gomes doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Smyth. Gomes wants to get back to full guard. Gomes keeping control of the leg, stopping his opponent passing to mount. Smyth is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Smyth is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Gomes sees it coming and defends easily. Smyth is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
