PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Rager Smith (ranked 4292 p4p, 4505 weight class) and Khorchi Tugan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Khorchi Tugan will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Rager Smith!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Khorchi Tugan!
The judges for this bout are Ryoma Takatsuka, Jeff Smith and Roger Salmon.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Smith shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Smith is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Tugan throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Smith tries to free his leg and advance position but Tugan is retaining full guard.
Smith wants to control from the top but Tugan keeps moving.
Smith won't allow Tugan to get back to his feet.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Smith throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Tugan works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Tugan has his foot on Smith's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Smith works his way back into a safe position though.
Tugan can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Smith controls the pace.

Tugan has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Smith is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.

Smith has clasped his hands together around Tugan's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.

Tugan throws Smith to one side and escapes!
Khorchi Tugan seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Smith stuffs the takedown.
Smith swung with a counter punch to the body but it didn't connect.
Tugan looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Smith scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Smith misses with a head shot. Tugan uses the momentum to regain guard.
Tugan trying to keep a closed guard but Smith is proving a slippery customer.

Tugan keeping moving, preventing Smith from controlling successfully.
Smith working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Tugan's head.
Smith is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Smith trying to move into half guard but instead Tugan has managed to sweep!

Smith seems keen to control Tugan's posture.
Smith wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Tugan manages to pass to side control.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Smith trying to control from the bottom.

Tugan is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Smith defends it well.
Tugan tries to pass the half guard into mount. Smith knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Smith throws a strike from the bottom that misses.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Tugan content to control rather than advance.
Smith misses with some strikes from the bottom.

Smith looking for submissions off his back.
Smith pushes Tugan off looking to stand but Tugan dives back in and keeps control.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Tugan drives through with a takedown into Smith's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Smith is wriggling around but Tugan manages to pass to half guard.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Khorchi Tugan dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Smith crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Tugan - the referee stops the clock and Smith gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Tugan. Smith manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.
The fight stays on the outside here - Tugan looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Smith tries a head kick but it misses.
And Tugan tries to counter it with a takedown but Smith pushes his down on his head and steps out.
Tugan lands a right hook to the body.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Tugan jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Smith walks away with a smile on his face. Tugan gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Smith tries to sprawl but Tugan drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Smith scrambles, trying to get to his feet, but Tugan manages to mount him!
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Smith wants to control but Tugan is having none of it.

Tugan looking to control but Smith is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.

Tugan is standing up, even though he is in mount.

Tugan gets caught flat footed, as Smith shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

Tugan has his feet on Smith's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.
We've been informed that Tugan has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.
Horrible takedown attempt by Tugan or perhaps it was just good defense by Smith, which made it look bad.

Tugan has taken the fight to the clinch.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Smith's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Tugan gets tackled into the cage by Smith. Smith maintains the clinch.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Tugan turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
Smith can't do much from the bottom here.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Tugan advances nicely into full mount.
Tugan wants to control the pace but Smith is squirming around nicely.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Tugan prevents Smith from getting the reversal.
Tugan looking to control but Smith is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Smith tries to reverse the position but Tugan maintains control.
Tugan unloads with some shots from mount but Smith bucks and avoids them well.
Tugan is looking to work his way around to Smith's back. He needs to be careful though, as he's in danger of losing this dominant position.

Tugan is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Smith to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Smith shrugs it off.

Tugan swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Smith is now in Tugan's guard. A big mistake from Tugan there, giving up the dominant position!
Smith controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Tugan had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Smith defends it easily.
Smith has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Tugan is proving hard to escape from.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Khorchi Tugan showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Smith's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Smith shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Tugan manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Tugan has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Smith has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.

Smith gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Tugan regains guard.

Tugan is looking for a triangle but Smith pushes his legs off easily.
Smith stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Tugan swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Tugan throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Smith escapes and throws Tugan's legs to the side, diving into side control!
Tugan takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Smith in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time.

Smith wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Tugan, who protects the arm well.
Khorchi Tugan has got the better of the ground game so far.
Smith scores with a couple of short elbows.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Smith taking a break here but Tugan is having none of it and regains half guard.
Smith seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Tugan trying to control from the bottom.
Smith working over Tugan with some ground and pound. Tugan looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Tugan is not content to let Smith control the position.
Well, if Smith is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Tugan wants to get back to full guard but Smith has passed into side control.
Tugan tries to bench press Smith off him but Smith keeps the position.
Smith laying and praying for a moment but Tugan takes advantage and regains half guard.
Tugan is looking to control Smith's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Tugan avoid being mounted?

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Tugan is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Smith jumps into side control!
Smith is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Tugan will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
Tugan is not content to let Smith control the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Smith lands a few punches from side control.

And that's the end of the fight!
Rager Smith showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Tugan has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
