PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Royal Halsti (ranked 716 p4p, 1459 weight class) and Ronaldo Gomes (ranked 106 p4p, 222 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Gomes's choice of entrance music: Cheo Gallego - El Anciano y El Niño. Both fighters look pumped up here. Let's hope this is a good fight!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 14 - 5 - 1, fighting out of Amsterdam, Royal Halsti!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Ronaldo Gomes!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Don Winkell and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gomes shoots for a takedown but Halsti saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Horrible takedown attempt by Gomes or perhaps it was just good defense by Halsti, which made it look bad.
Gomes lands an overhand right.

Halsti gets caught flat footed, as Gomes shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Gomes postures up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gomes wants to control from the top but Halsti keeps moving.

Halsti is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Halsti bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Gomes's guard.


Gomes is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Halsti is aware though and is defending well.
Gomes looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Halsti trying to control but Gomes is working from the bottom.

Gomes manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Halsti manages to get himself to full guard.

Gomes not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Gomes got a little sloppy there for a moment and Halsti has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Gomes has managed to get both his arms back between Halsti's legs - danger averted.

Halsti escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Gomes gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Halsti loads up on a big right hand but Gomes slips the punch.

and Halsti counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Royal Halsti has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ronaldo Gomes.

and Halsti cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Ronaldo Gomes seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Gomes avoids the body shot from Halsti.
Halsti misses with a looping left.
Gomes shoots and misses
and Halsti counters with a straight right hand.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Gomes shoots in looking for a takedown. Halsti tries to sprawl out of it but Gomes keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Halsti manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Halsti is looking to counter punch.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Royal Halsti will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Gomes swings and misses with a hook to the body.

and Halsti counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Halsti swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Gomes with the counter takedown but Halsti avoids it easily.

Gomes gets a double leg takedown into Halsti's guard.
Ronaldo Gomes has got the better of the ground game so far.
Halsti keeping moving, preventing Gomes from controlling successfully.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Halsti tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Halsti looking to hit a scissor sweep but Gomes is one step ahead there.

Gomes postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Halsti is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Gomes, into his guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Halsti slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Halsti slips nicely into half guard.

Halsti is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Gomes doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Halsti.

Halsti looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Halsti is looking for a kimura but Gomes is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Halsti to get the leverage.
Gomes is trying to maintain the position but Halsti is very close to passing his half guard.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
A swing and a miss from Halsti.
Halsti throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Halsti tries a head kick but it misses.
Gomes shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Halsti as he jumps to the side.
A counter left hand to the body from Halsti misses its target.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Royal Halsti dominated that second round.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!

Gomes closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.

Gomes shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Halsti manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Gomes content to sit in guard, stalling... Great. Oh but he could get punished here because Halsti has locked up a guillotine! Halsti's face is contorted as he sqeezes tight on the submission attempt - will he finish? Gomes is holding on here and Halsti must be using up a lot of energy. Gomes has gone limp! He's out! He's out cold! Halsti gets to his feet, tossing aside his stricken foe. Arms raised, he milks the applause from the crowd. Great submission!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:51 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Royal Halsti!
A relieved looking Royal Halsti thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
