Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Jhonny Sparks (ranked 3549 p4p, 4401 weight class) and Stian Lygre (ranked 341 p4p, 380 weight class). Lygre is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by ADHD. Jhonny Sparks had real problems making weight for this fight. After initially coming in at 146.0lbs, he had two hours to make the official fight weight. He made it but it will have taken a lot out of him to cut those extra few pounds. Jhonny Sparks has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jhonny Sparks! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Stian Lygre! The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Frank Antenori and Timothy Bukovac.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Lygre shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Sparks as he jumps to the side. Lygre tries to clinch up. Lygre looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. Lygre fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Sparks avoids it really well and circles away. Jhonny Sparks has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Stian Lygre. Lygre tries to close the distance and clinch up but Sparks swats him away and circles back towards the center. Jhonny Sparks seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Lygre with a poor takedown and Sparks moves into the clinch. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Lygre wants to get back to striking at distance but Sparks won't allow it.
Sparks is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Lygre gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt. Sparks has Lygre pushed against the cage. Lygre looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.

Lygre is thwarting Sparks's attempts to control the position. Sparks is looking for a sweep. Lygre is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Sparks moves into full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Lygre controls from within his opponent's guard. Sparks keeping moving, preventing Lygre from controlling successfully. Lygre trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Sparks pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Lygre is keeping the position for now. Sparks slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up. Sparks's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground. Sparks wants to control from the top but Lygre keeps moving. Sparks has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Lygre is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. Lygre looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Sparks trying to control but Lygre is working from the bottom. The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up. Sparks is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Lygre is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Sparks scores with a takedown into Lygre's guard. Lygre is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Lygre is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Lygre controls Sparks momentarily but Sparks frees himself. Sparks postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head. Lygre working a defensive guard here.
Lygre wants to sweep here but Sparks controlling him for the moment. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Sparks is looking to pass into half guard but Lygre pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Lygre is in guard. Sparks keeping moving, preventing Lygre from controlling successfully. And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that Jhonny Sparks will probably get the nod. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! Sparks shoots in but no luck this time. Lygre tries to counter with a clinch but Sparks shakes him off and moves away. Sparks fails with the takedown and Lygre counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work. Lygre has a takedown stuffed. Lygre stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Lygre wants it to stay on the feet. Lygre is looking for the big counter here. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jhonny Sparks. That's going to take a lot out of him. Lygre fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Sparks avoids it really well and circles away. Sparks wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Sparks manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Lygre on his heels. He'll look to pass Lygre's guard now, I'm sure. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Sparks accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Lygre trying to control the position.

That's two minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Lygre has gone for a leg lock! Sparks slips out almost immediately though and dives into Lygre's guard. Sparks looking to control the position here, rather than advance. Sparks wants to control from the top but Lygre keeps moving.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Sparks advances to half guard. Still in half guard, Sparks seems content to control. Lygre looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Sparks looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio. Sparks sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Lygre defending well though. Sparks lands strikes from half guard. Sparks is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Lygre is just riding it out for now. Sparks eventually gives up the hold. Lygre moves into full guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Sparks working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Lygre's head. Lygre utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. Sparks wants to control from the top but Lygre keeps moving. Lygre trying to keep a closed guard but Sparks is proving a slippery customer.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Lygre tries to land a sweep but no joy. Sparks trying to control but Lygre is working from the bottom. The referee is pacing around the two fighters, thinking about a standup. And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
Jhonny Sparks dominated that second round. The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round! Nice takedown defense from Lygre. No joy for Sparks on that attempt. Lygre tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away. Lygre slaps away a takedown attempt from Sparks, before circling back to the center of the mat. Lygre dives in for a single leg takedown but Sparks sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage. Sparks decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard. Sparks throws a big elbow that misses, also allowing Lygre to regain full guard. Sparks working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Lygre's head. Sparks controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. Sparks tries to free his leg and advance position but Lygre is retaining full guard. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Lygre wants to sweep but no luck.

That's two minutes gone in the round. Lygre pulls Sparks in close to prevent any damage. Sparks controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. Lygre closes the distance and clinches up with Sparks, looking for a takedown. Lygre pushes Sparks against the cage but Sparks circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Sparks fails with the takedown. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jhonny Sparks. That's going to take a lot out of him. Sparks shoots in but no luck this time. Lygre is clearly looking to counter with head kicks. Lygre changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Sparks tries to avoid it but Lygre manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Sparks to the ground. Sparks escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet. Sparks goes for a double leg but Lygre avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Lygre continues to drive forward. Both fighters are breathing heavily.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Sparks has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Lygre is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet. Sparks wants a takedown but no success here.
Lygre jumps guard but Sparks stands there with Lygre around his waist. Lygre gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Lygre gets control of Sparks's arms and successfully pulls guard. Lygre will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back. Lygre wants to stand but Sparks is controlling the position. Sparks is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long. Lygre wants to sweep here but Sparks controlling him for the moment.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Sparks's corner is telling him to maintain position. Sparks is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact. Sparks controls the pace of the fight for a moment. The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

Lygre displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Sparks. Stian Lygre has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Sparks feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
And that's the end of the fight! Jhonny Sparks showed his dominance in that final round. Well I reckon that's a shut out for Sparks, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

After the fight, Jhonny Sparks was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly. The defeated Stian Lygre had this to say: 'I'll learn from this and I will be back. '.
