The judges for this bout are Chad Campbell, Alyssa Summers and Jonathan Paton.


The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way.

Smyth throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Miles tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Smyth is in Miles's guard.

Smyth trying to control the position from guard on top but Miles is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Smyth drops back, looking for a kneebar! Miles looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Miles looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Miles!

Miles controlling from side mount.
Smyth is not content to let Miles control the position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
You can see the frustration on Smyth's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Miles trying to control the position but Smyth is working away.

Miles goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Smyth has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Miles but great work by Smyth.

Miles prevents Smyth from moving into mount.

Smyth is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Miles is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Smyth tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Miles tries to improve position but can't.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Smyth tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Smyth has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Miles is trying to get back to half guard.

Smyth has hold of Miles's arm. He's looking for a kimura. Miles seems comfortable defending it but Smyth has shifted his position slighty and is cranking on the arm! Miles is real pain and he's forced to tap out! Miles is disgusted with himself for not defending it better but Smyth couldn't care less - he's delighted!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:59 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). William Smyth!
