CWC 328 - Prelims PBP Commentary |
This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the middleweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Amsterdam, with a TWGC record of 10 wins and 16 losses; Mark Merel! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Hilo, with a TWGC record of 0 wins and 0 losses; Carson Tully! The judges for this bout are Mauricio Rocha, Felipe Paraventi and Thiago Cunha.
The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Tully has a takedown stuffed. Tully gets a clinch. Merel lands a takedown into guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Merel wants to pass the guard but Tully is keeping the position. Merel controlling from the top position. Merel is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long. That's four minutes gone in the round. Tully slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard. Tully slips effortlessly into side control - very nice. Score +3 for passing guard: Merel (2) vs (5) Tully Merel is not content to let Tully control the position. Merel is trying to improve his position.
That's five minutes gone in the round. Merel gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard. Tully tries to pass the half guard into mount. Merel knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. Merel slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work. Tully passes Merel's right leg, so he's now in half guard. Tully trying to control from half guard but Merel is working away. Tully looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
That's six minutes gone in the round. Merel tries to get to full guard but Tully has control of the leg. Tully is working for a kimura but Merel is defending it quite comfortably.
Tully is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
That's seven minutes gone in the round. Merel is staying active underneath Tully, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Tully trying to control from Merel's half guard. Merel has other ideas though and has regained full guard. Tully passes easily into side control. Nice work. A lull in the action here as Tully stalls from top position.
That's eight minutes gone in the round. Merel is looking to reverse the position. Tully tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Tully has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought! Merel is letting Tully control him for a moment.
That's nine minutes gone in the round. Tully tries for a kimura but Merel is defending well. Tully trying to control the action but Merel is working from the bottom. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Tully tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Tully has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought! Merel manages to get back to half guard.

Tully takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position. Merel looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Tully tries to pass the half guard into mount. Merel knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
That's eleven minutes gone in the round. Tully is trying to work for a kimura but Merel is defending well.
Merel is trying to maintain the position but Tully is very close to passing his half guard. Merel tries to roll over but Tully keeps him under control. We've been hearing good reports from Merel's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today. Tully is looking to stall here but Merel recovers full guard. Tully is stalling in the full guard.
That's twelve minutes gone in the round. Merel not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Tully seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. Merel controls Tully momentarily but Tully frees himself. Tully is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position. Tully stands and throws Merel's legs to the side, diving into side control. That's thirteen minutes gone in the round. Merel is looking for a sweep. Tully is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Merel is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. Merel is positioning himself to get back to half guard. Tully taking a break here but Merel is having none of it and regains half guard. Tully prevents Merel from improving his position.
That's fourteen minutes gone in the round. Merel trying to control here.
Tully keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action. Tully looking to pass the half guard. Not this time. Tully with a momentary lay and pray from half guard. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Tully wants to advance to full mount but Merel doesn't think that's going to happen and regains full guard instead. Tully engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
And that's the end of the fight! Tully wins on points by 11 to 2. Carson Tully decided to thank the fans in attendance for making a great atmosphere. It seemed to go down pretty well. |
