Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Max Powers! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, David Douillet! The judges for this bout are Paulo Santos, Felipe Paraventi and Luis Engracia.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Powers feints and as Douillet raises his hands in defense, Powers changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard. Powers trying to control but Douillet is working from the bottom. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Powers trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Powers won't allow Douillet to sweep him here. Douillet keeping moving, preventing Powers from controlling successfully. Powers content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots. Douillet is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Powers is controlling him.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Douillet gets the takedown into side control. Douillet creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Powers sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike. Powers manages to work his way to half guard, despite Douillet's best efforts. Douillet drops an elbow to the side of Powers's head.
That's one minute gone in the round. Powers is trying to control but can't.
Douillet working Powers over with strikes. Douillet is figuring out what he wants to do next. Douillet thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Powers's head. Powers works his way to full guard. Good work. Douillet controls from within his opponent's guard. Powers looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Powers looking to hit a scissor sweep but Douillet is one step ahead there. Powers keeping full guard, as Douillet tries to pass.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Douillet stays in close to Powers's body and controls the position. Powers is looking for a triangle but Douillet pushes his legs off easily.
Powers is breathing heavily. Douillet wants to control from the top but Powers keeps moving. Douillet working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Douillet chips away with some ground and pound. Douillet passes into half guard. Douillet looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Powers with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. Douillet seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Powers does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. Douillet lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt. Powers moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Powers trying to keep a closed guard but Douillet is proving a slippery customer.
Douillet seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. Powers is looking for a triangle but Douillet pushes his legs off easily.
Douillet stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Powers swivels though and keeps the full guard. Douillet trying to control but Powers is working from the bottom. Douillet slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Douillet is looking to take a break and control but Powers is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Powers is trying to control Douillet's posture but Douillet avoids it. Powers is trying to improve his position. Powers sneaks back into half guard. Douillet slows the pace down in half guard. Powers keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
David Douillet dominated that round. That's time! Powers's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.
Douillet shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Powers's guard. Powers working for a triangle but Douillet defends it easily.
Douillet is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions. Douillet postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head. Douillet throwing strikes from guard but Powers blocks nicely. Douillet trying to control but Powers is working from the bottom. Douillet working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. Douillet looking to control the position here, rather than advance. Powers isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Douillet stacks Powers on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Douillet! Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
That's one minute gone in the round. Powers gets back to half guard. Douillet not doing much here.
Douillet is stalling here. Powers is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Douillet seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Powers has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work. Powers working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. Douillet sneaks back into half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. Douillet regains full guard. Nicely done. Douillet looking to hit a scissor sweep but Powers is one step ahead there. David Douillet has got the better of the ground game so far. Douillet is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. Powers is refusing to be controlled, as Douillet sits in half guard. Powers trying to control here but he's found himself mounted! Oh no!
Douillet with the ground and pound from mount. Douillet postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Powers looks a forlorn figure.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Douillet cracks Powers with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Douillet prevents Powers from getting the reversal. Douillet avoids the attempt from Powers to control. Douillet lands with some strikes. Douillet landing punches.
Powers is rocked! Douillet controlling from mount. Douillet lands a heavy elbow. Oh Powers is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!! Powers is looking to get to half guard. Powers seems to have got his legs back now. Douillet postures up and connects with a big shot that has rocked Powers badly. He's trying desperately to grab hold of Douillet around the waist but Douillet pushes him off and unloads with more strikes, forcing the referee to jump in and save him! Douillet is the winner by TKO! Douillet jumps onto the cage and shouts into the camera. "We did it momma!"
