PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Yardbird Knox (ranked 463 p4p, 753 weight class) and Daniel Spong (ranked 61 p4p, 91 weight class). I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 27 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Yardbird Knox!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 13 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Daniel Spong!
The judges for this bout are William Gold, Richard Clark and Daniel Bishop.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Spong lands an overhand right.
Spong dips to his left and cracks Knox with an uppercut!
Knox looks to land a left hand but Spong moved out of range nicely.
Spong drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Knox defends it well.
Knox ducks right into an uppercut from Spong.
The fighters circling - Spong throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
A big left from Spong misses.
Knox is looking to counter with a body kick.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Spong has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.
Spong jabs. That one connects to the head of his opponent.
Spong moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.
Spong fails to land the takedown.
Spong thuds his right hand into Knox's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
Spong loads up on a big right hand but Knox slips the punch.
Spong connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Knox takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.

Spong drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Knox defends it well.
Spong throws a sloppy head kick and Knox moves out of range easily.

Knox stuffs the takedown.
Knox just misses with a punch to the body.
Knox lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Spong misses with a left hand
and Knox counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Spong thinking.

Spong throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Knox tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Spong is in Knox's guard.
Spong in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Spong wants to pass the guard but Knox is keeping the position.

Knox's coaches at Canadian Combat Academy have been working on his defensive grappling in preparation for this fight so let's see if he can get out of this tricky position.

Spong thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

Spong is looking to work some ground and pound but Knox has wrist control.

Knox will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Spong looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Knox with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Spong throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Knox works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Spong content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
Knox has momentary wrist control but Spong slips an elbow through the middle.
Spong trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Spong wants to control from the top but Knox keeps moving.
Spong passes Knox's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Knox has hold of Spong's hands but Spong slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Spong has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Spong is looking to take a break and control but Knox is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Daniel Spong dominated that round.
That's time! Knox's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

Spong takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
Spong lands with a straight right. Knox didn't see that one coming.
Spong displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Knox throws out the jab.
Spong has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

and Knox counters with a lovely shot to the body.
Spong throws out a loose jab but Knox uses good head movement to avoid it.
It looked like Knox wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.
Spong might want to mix his strikes up a bit more. He's just going for head shots at the moment and that can become a bit predictable.
Spong throws a hook to the side of Knox's head but Knox sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Spong looks to land a left hand but Knox moved out of range nicely.
Knox takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
Spong uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook.
The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Spong. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.

Spong shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

Spong stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Knox swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Knox knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Spong on the ground.

Spong keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Knox's head.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Spong connects with a nice short shot to Knox's temple.

Spong thows a huge punch but Knox dodges it nicely.
Spong is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
Oh Knox is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Spong lands a big elbow - Knox is out of it! He's waving his arms around but his eyes are closed and he's not intelligently defending himself - the ref has no choice but to jump in and stop the fight! This one is in the books! A TKO win for Spong!

During a confident post fight interview, Daniel Spong thanked all his fans. He seemed very genuine when describing how motivated his fans keep him.
The defeated Yardbird Knox had this to say: 'If you haven't lost in this sport, you haven't fought the right guys yet.'.
