PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Tommy Sawyer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Digo Maha (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Digo Maha told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Tommy Sawyer!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Digo Maha!
The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Seu Braga and Edson Gomes.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sawyer tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Maha paws at him with a jab and circles away.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Sawyer.

and Sawyer counters with a stiff right hand.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Maha.
Sawyer managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by Maha.
Sawyer manages to get back to half guard.
Maha trying to control the pace.
Sawyer tries to get to full guard but Maha has control of the leg.

Maha is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Sawyer doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Maha.

Maha really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Sawyer. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Sawyer is staying active underneath Maha, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Sawyer is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Maha pulls his head out easily.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

and Maha counters with a single leg into guard. Sawyer didn't expect that.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Maha seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Maha passes Sawyer's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Maha lands with a punch from half guard.

Maha decides to stand and escape the position.
Sawyer lands with an overhand left.

and Maha counters with an outside leg kick.
Maha shoots in but no luck this time.

Sawyer connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt.

so Maha counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Tommy Sawyer. That's going to take a lot out of him.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Sawyer looking for a guillotine here but Maha defends easily.

Sawyer has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Maha can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Sawyer tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Sawyer keeping moving, preventing Maha from controlling successfully.
Sawyer not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Maha wanted to stand there but Sawyer had control of the position.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Sawyer scores with a three punch combo!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Digo Maha dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

and Maha decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Sawyer's guard.
Sawyer is trying to control the position but Maha postures up.

Sawyer has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Maha is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Sawyer.

Maha stands up and beckons Sawyer to his feet.

The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Sawyer takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.
Maha cracks Sawyer with a big elbow.
Sawyer is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Maha off and has taken his back!
Maha wants to control his opponent's hands but Sawyer gets his hands free.
You can see the frustration on Maha's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.

Sawyer looking to break Maha's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Maha remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Sawyer will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke!

Sawyer is working for the choke. It looks like he might have got it... has he...? Yes! Maha is tapping out! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:02 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Tommy Sawyer!
