PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Zahir Harden (ranked 2490 p4p, 5808 weight class) and Joost Pertle (ranked 321 p4p, 551 weight class). Both fighters will be looking to make this an exciting fight for the fans, I'm sure!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Zahir Harden!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Joost Pertle!
The judges for this bout are Lou da Vinci, Chad Campbell and David Schapiro.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Pertle drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Harden definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.
Harden wants to control but Pertle postures up.
Harden is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Pertle's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
Harden is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Pertle's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Pertle's back!

Harden looking for the choke but no joy.
Harden throwing sloppy strikes.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Pertle is being controlled on the ground here - he must escape this position otherwise surely the end is near.

Harden is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Pertle knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Pertle for a finish.
Harden gets his hands free as Pertle looks to control.
Harden throwing lazy shots from the back mount that aren't doing any damage.
Pertle is very frustrated here, being controlled quite effectively by Harden.
Pertle trying to get back to his feet but Harden is in full control for now.

Harden has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Pertle has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!

Harden is working hard for the rear naked choke here.

Pertle wants to escape the position.
Pertle trying to control the action but Harden just sinks the hooks in.
Pertle rolls, trying to escape but Harden keeps control of the position.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
The crowd hopeful of a finish here - Harden's supporters are on their feet, screaming for him to go for the rear naked choke.
Pertle really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Harden. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Harden is controlling the position but Pertle somehow manages to roll and ends up with half guard.
Pertle tries to get to full guard but Harden has control of the leg.
Harden throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Harden wants to control but Pertle is keeping him busy.

Harden wants to work for an arm triangle but Pertle is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Pertle wants to get back to full guard.
Pertle wants to control but Harden is keeping busy.
Pertle wants to get back to full guard but Harden has mounted him!
Pertle tries to hold on but Harden postures up.
Harden lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Pertle hang on?

Pertle is trying to stand.

Harden is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Pertle to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Pertle shrugs it off.
The referee warns Pertle that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.

Harden gets to his feet and calls his opponent to stand. Here come the fireworks!

Pertle changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Harden looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Harden is trying to get back to half guard.
Pertle advances to mount.
Harden is breathing heavily.
Pertle misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Zahir Harden dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Harden fails with a takedown attempt.

Harden gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Pertle to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Pertle has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Harden is proving hard to escape from.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Harden looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Harden keeping moving, preventing Pertle from controlling successfully.
Harden on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Harden tries to get out of the position.

Harden has his foot on Pertle's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Pertle works his way back into a safe position though.
Pertle wants to control from the top but Harden keeps moving.
Pertle is looking to advance position but Harden has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!

Pertle tries to lock up and control but Harden gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Harden connects with a couple of good shots from mount.

Harden scoring with strikes but Pertle is staying in there.
Zahir Harden overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Harden lands a couple of good shots and Pertle has given up his back, trying to escape the position!
Harden has the hooks in. Pertle is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
The referee is taking a good look at Pertle as he is on the wrong end of some big shots from Harden!
Pertle tries to roll but Harden sticks to his back.

Harden is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Pertle defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined.

Harden is not going to allow Pertle to sit and survive in this position.

Harden has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Harden controlling well, preventing Pertle from escaping the position.
Pertle keeps trying to improve his position.

Harden is working on the RNC. He looks like he's got it but Pertle won't tap... Oh, he's out! The ref rips Harden off his unconscious opponent!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:58 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Zahir Harden!
After the fight, Zahir Harden was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
