PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Hulk Eye (ranked 4054 p4p, 3993 weight class) and Daniel Cortez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Daniel Cortez!
The judges for this bout are Ben Zyskovitsi, Roosa Järviläinen and Tarja Halkonen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Eye bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Cortez's head.

Eye gets caught napping as Cortez dives in and scores a takedown. Eye manages to retain guard.
Eye can't keep his opponent in guard - Cortez advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Eye has his foot on Cortez's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Cortez works his way back into a safe position though.

Cortez is trying to get an arm triangle but Eye is defending well.
Cortez wants to lay and pray for a moment but Eye keeps working.
Cortez might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Eye haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Cortez is looking to take a break and control but Eye is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Eye can't do much from the bottom here.

Cortez swings around for an armbar but Eye sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Cortez's guard.
Cortez is trying to control the position but Eye postures up.

Eye gets to his feet - Cortez follows without any prompting.

Cortez manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Eye on his heels. He'll look to pass Eye's guard now, I'm sure.
Cortez works a leg free and moves into half guard.

Cortez is looking for a kimura but Eye is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Cortez to get the leverage.

Eye wants to stand back up but Cortez manages to pass into side control.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.
Cortez advances to mount.
Eye has given up his back - I don’t know if this is a deliberate ploy to try and escape or if he is just struggling down there.

Cortez is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Eye defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined.

Cortez is remaining active here, looking for the choke. The more discerning members of the crowd will appreciate his efforts.
Eye is trying to get back to his feet but he's not managed it yet.

Cortez looking to break Eye's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Eye remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Cortez will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke!

Cortez is persistently looking for the submission but Eye is defending it well.
What can Eye do to escape this position? He's going to have to figure it out pretty quick if he wants to stay in the fight!

Cortez is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Eye knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Eye for a finish.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action.

A right-left combo lands from Eye.
Eye throws a leg kick but he was too far away and it doesn't land.
Eye lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Eye.

Cortez shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Eye is trying to defend but Cortez finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Eye tries to hold on but Cortez pushes him away.

Cortez wants to finish this one by submission but Eye is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Cortez.
Cortez takes Eye's back. Could be looking for a rear naked choke here - either way, Eye is in trouble.

Cortez has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Eye has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!
Eye wants to get back to his feet.

Eye is trying to defend against the choke here but Cortez has an arm under his chin. This one might not last much longer. Cortez Tightens the hold and Eye taps out furiously! Cortez displays superior BJJ to win the fight.
