Smits comes to the cage accompanied by Kanye West - Amazing. Penn has chosen Go to sleep as his entrance music. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Smits has taken the fight to the clinch.
Penn tries for a takedown. No joy.
Penn has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Smits is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet. Smits wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee. Penn missing with knees to the body.

Jag Smits has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of DJ Penn. Penn is trying to wear down his opponent with knees to the body. An uppercut to the body lands inside from Smits. Penn pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. Penn keeps the fight on the outside. He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Smits was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure! Smits is going olschool here, as he tries to force Penn to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Penn shrugs it off. Penn is squirming around, avoiding Smits's attempts to control the action.
That's one minute gone in the round. Smits looking for a guillotine from mount but Penn is having none of it. Smits blocks Penn's feeble attempts to strike from the bottom. That's two minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Smits is working for a kimura but Penn is defending it quite comfortably.
Penn is trying to get back to full guard. Penn actively working from the bottom here. Penn looking for submissions off his back. Penn looks gassed! Smits is looking for a kimura but Penn is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Smits to get the leverage. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Penn tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land. Smits wants to lay and pray for a moment but Penn keeps working. Smits looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. Smits doesn't manage to clinch there - Penn circles away.
Penn gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily and Smits counters by clinching up. Smits jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Penn walks away with a smile on his face. Smits gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head. Penn feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position. Penn is looking to work some ground and pound but Smits has wrist control. Penn thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Penn is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Smits looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Penn pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Smits is keeping the position for now. Penn pushes down on Smits's leg and manages to get into half guard. Smits blocking the ground and pound attempt from Penn. Penn is looking to advance position but Smits won't allow it. Penn not landing any meaningful shots this time. Penn is working for a submission of some sort.
Smits is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Penn pulls his head out easily. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Smits throws a big shot that misses. Penn gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily and Smits counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Penn thinking. Penn with a lazy takedown attempt and Smits counters by clinching up. Smits's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not. Smits gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Penn.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. Penn tries a head kick but it misses.

Smits moves out of range of the body kick. Penn keeps the fight on the outside. Smits lands a head kick!
Penn gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily and Penn takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles. Penn gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Smits to score an easy takedown into full guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Penn looking to hit a scissor sweep but Smits is one step ahead there. Smits thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Penn is looking for a triangle but Smits pushes his legs off easily.
Smits trying to control but Penn is working from the bottom. Smits is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Penn is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him. Penn working for a triangle but Smits defends it easily.

Smits drops back looking for a leg! Penn is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Penn manages to kick Smits off! Smits jumps back into Penn's guard.

Jag Smits is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach. Penn working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Smits doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Smits manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Penn being controlled here, momentarily.

And that's the end of the fight! I would just about give that final round to DJ Penn. Well Smits has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
