PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Pope Park (ranked 3859 p4p, 3251 weight class) and William Winkie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that William Winkie was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Pope Park!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, William Winkie!
The judges for this bout are Trevor Gratis, Gregory Folan and Yves DeLean.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Winkie moves to clinch but Park breaks away
letting Park counter with a right hand.

It looks like William Winkie has been cut.

Winkie has Park up against the cage in a clinch.
Park wants to break the clinch but can't.

Park escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Winkie instigates a clinch.

Winkie jumps guard and drags Park to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Winkie pulls Park in close to prevent any damage.
Winkie is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Winkie is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

Park pushes Winkie off but Winkie dives into side control.
Winkie controls the position.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Park is trying to get back to his feet.
Winkie is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Park's shoulder. That is not cool.

The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Winkie wants to clinch.
A little feinted left hand from Park on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.
Winkie tries to clinch up.

Winkie has closed the distance and engaged Park in a clinch.
Park can't break the clinch.

Winkie successfully pulls guard.
Winkie controlling Park's posture.

Park wants to stand but Winkie has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Winkie lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Park wants to stand but Winkie is controlling the position.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

William Winkie dominated that round.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Winkie closes the distance and pushes Park back into the cage.
Winkie tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Park smiles and moves away.
Winkie is looking to clinch but Park is avoiding it.

Park breaks from the clinch.
Park swats away the attempt to clinch by Winkie.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Park manages to break the clinch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Park tries to keep at a distance but Winkie has taken the fight into the clinch.

Winkie successfully pulls guard.
Park wants to stand but Winkie has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Winkie holds on and takes a little breather.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Winkie wants to sweep here but Park controlling him for the moment.
Winkie pulls Park in close to prevent any damage.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Winkie moves into range and clinches up with Park.
Winkie tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Park just stands there and leans against the cage.
Park tries to break the clinch but Winkie is controlling the position.
Winkie tries to pull guard but Park forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
Pope Park has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of William Winkie.
Park wants to get back to striking at distance but Winkie won't allow it.
Park is trying to break the clinch but Winkie is controlling him.

Winkie pulls Park into guard.

Park tries to stand but Winkie is controlling from the bottom.
Winkie has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Winkie wants to clinch but Park slips to the side
and Park cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Park circles away from the clinch attempt.
An attempted straight right counter from Park misses the target.

enabling Park to counter with a crisp jab.

Winkie closes the distance and pushes Park back into the cage.
Park working hard to break the clinch.
Winkie keeps control of Park as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

Winkie jumps into guard, dragging Park to the mat.
Winkie is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Winkie is on top in guard.

Park wants to stand and escape but Winkie is having none of it.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

William Winkie showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!

Winkie is looking to clinch.
Winkie tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Park manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Park is looking to counter punch.
Winkie wants to clinch up but Park keeps it at a distance.

Winkie fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Park, pushing him back against the cage.

Park breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Winkie moves into range and clinches up with Park.

Park pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Winkie closes the distance and clinches.
Winkie jumps guard but Park turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.

Winkie manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

The fight stays on the outside here - Winkie looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Winkie tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Park paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Park swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
Park scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.
Winkie takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.

Winkie clinches with his opponent.
Park has had enough of the clinch but Winkie keeps him there for the moment.
Park wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
William Winkie seems to be working more effectively in the clinch in the fight so far.
Winkie keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Park's efforts to push away.

Winkie has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Park uses from the top position.

William Winkie comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Winkie winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
