The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Penn shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Turbo pinned against the cage. Turbo gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. The fight stays on the outside here - Penn looks like he's thinking about clinching though. Penn closes the distance and clinches up with Turbo, looking for a takedown. Penn pushes Turbo against the cage but Turbo circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Turbo is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. Turbo staying out of range there. Turbo lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
It looks like BJ Penn has been cut. Penn walks into a straight right hand from Turbo. BJ Penn seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Penn fails with a takedown attempt from distance. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for BJ Penn. That's going to take a lot out of him. Nice takedown defense from Turbo. No joy for Penn on that attempt. Turbo tries to score with a low kick but Penn moves his leg out of the way. Penn fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. Turbo lands a body shot.
Penn is breathing heavily. Turbo lands a really nice looking cross but Penn seems unphased.
That's one minute gone in the round. The fight moves into the clinch position. This is turning into a torrid day at the office for Penn. He's trying desperately to land a takedown but he's failing miserably and getting slapped silly on the feet to compound his misery. Turbo manages to break the clinch.
Turbo drops Penn with a hook right on the temple. He thinks about going to the ground but Penn looks back up at him and smiles so Turbo waves him back to his feet - he obviously thinks he can knock him out after that shot landed.
Penn is rocked! Both fighters step back and shake their arms out. Turbo engages and cracks Penn with a massive lead left hook - Penn tumbles to the floor, out cold! What a shot! Turbo is delighted - all that hard work in training paid off!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:26 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Dave Turbo!
