PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Roman Welch (ranked 4629 p4p, 4551 weight class) and Joosep Lohmus (ranked 462 p4p, 0 weight class). Lohmus is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Insomnia (Radio Edit). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Roman Welch!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Joosep Lohmus!
The judges for this bout are Kenichi Hosakawa, Shigeki Fujiwara and Yukihiro Yamamoto.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Welch shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Lohmus defends it nicely.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Lohmus.
Welch throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Lohmus's waist but Lohmus gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Welch off to one side.
Lohmus looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Welch throws a head kick that looked like it stung.

It looks like Joosep Lohmus has been cut.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Lohmus fails in his attempt to clinch.
Welch throws a counter high kick but Lohmus was just alert enough to avoid it.

Lohmus stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Lohmus wants it to stay on the feet.

Lohmus moves into range and clinches up with Welch.

Welch manages to break the clinch.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Lohmus is defended easily by Welch.
Welch tries to close the distance and clinch up but Lohmus swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Lohmus jumps guard and drags Welch to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Lohmus lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Lohmus avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Welch can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Lohmus controls the pace.

Welch utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Lohmus controlling from the top position.
Welch manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Lohmus manages to get himself to full guard.


Lohmus manages to wriggle out and sneak his way back up to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched up against the cage.

Welch prevents Lohmus from breaking the clinch.

Welch breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Lohmus changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Welch tries to avoid it but Lohmus manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Welch to the ground. Welch escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Welch moves into the clinch successfully.
Lohmus fails to pull guard.
Welch looking for a takedown.
Welch tries to pull guard but Lohmus forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
Welch wants to take the fight to the mat but Lohmus manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
Lohmus is trying to break the clinch but Welch is controlling him.

Welch misses with a punch on the inside.
Lohmus has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Welch is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Welch shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Lohmus as he jumps to the side.
Lohmus ducks down and throws a hook to the body.
Lohmus moves out of range of the body kick.

Welch fails with the takedown.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Roman Welch. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Lohmus shoots in but no luck this time.
Lohmus tries to score a power double leg takedown but Welch sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Lohmus somewhat.

Welch throws a series of punches but Lohmus avoids them all with ease.
Lohmus looks to land a body kick but Welch moved away.
Welch defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Lohmus.
Welch tries to counter with a takedown but Lohmus is quick to defend against it.
Lohmus swats away the attempt to clinch by Welch.
Welch tries to clinch there but Lohmus circles away.
Lohmus shoots for a takedown but Welch saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Welch really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

and Welch counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Welch.
Welch tries to pull guard but Lohmus holds him up against the cage and eventually Welch drops back down to his feet.
Lohmus tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Lohmus is working for takedown but Welch is calmly controlling the position for now.
Welch drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Welch gets through Lohmus's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Welch seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Lohmus is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.

Lohmus has his foot on Welch's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Welch works his way back into a safe position though.

Welch turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
Welch shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Lohmus sprawls well. Lohmus wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Welch gets slowly back to his feet.
Lohmus throws a right hand that Welch ducks under and follows up with a left that Welch also avoids with ease.
Lohmus misses with an uppercut. Welch saw that one coming.

Lohmus tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Welch avoids it.

Welch breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Welch wants to clinch up but Lohmus keeps it at a distance.
Welch fails with a takedown attempt.
Lohmus is trying to avoid his opponent's strikes and get into the clinch.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
