PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Akihiro Gomi (ranked 4264 p4p, 4267 weight class) and Nicolai Grigorev (ranked 163 p4p, 161 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 1 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Akihiro Gomi!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Nicolai Grigorev!
The judges for this bout are Alyssa Summers, John Kavanagh and Dean Styles.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gomi shoots in for a takedown but Grigorev shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Grigorev tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Gomi manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Gomi shoots for a double leg takedown but Grigorev sprawls well. He's pushed Gomi's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
A head kick misses from Grigorev.
Gomi misses with a series of wild punches.
Gomi is trying hard to land a takedown here. Grigorev sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Akihiro Gomi. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Grigorev shoots in but no luck this time.

Gomi gets a clinch.
A shot in the inside from Grigorev.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Grigorev is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Gomi to keep the fight standing.

Gomi jumps guard.
Grigorev must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Gomi is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Grigorev defends well.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Gomi is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Gomi on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Gomi tries to get out of the position.

Gomi is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Grigorev is aware though and is defending well.
Grigorev trying to control the position from guard on top but Gomi is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Gomi pulls Grigorev in close to his closed guard and prevents Grigorev from doing any damage or advancing position.
Grigorev really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Gomi. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Gomi tries to strike from the bottom.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Gomi pulls Grigorev in close to his closed guard and prevents Grigorev from doing any damage or advancing position.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.

Gomi drives through and clinches with Grigorev against the cage.
Gomi jumps guard but Grigorev stands there with Gomi around his waist. Gomi gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Grigorev goes for a takedown in the clinch but Gomi prevents it.
Grigorev stops a takedown attempt from Gomi.
Grigorev has had enough of the clinch but Gomi keeps him there for the moment.

Gomi pulls guard.
Gomi has control of Grigorev's left arm, preventing Grigorev from doing any damage.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Gomi pushes Grigorev off and scrambles back to his feet.

Gomi gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Gomi on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
A frustrated look appears on Grigorev's face as he tries to break the clinch.

Gomi jumps guard and drags Grigorev to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Gomi bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Grigorev's guard.

Grigorev being controlled here, momentarily.
Grigorev is trying to control the position from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Gomi stays in close to Grigorev's body and controls the position.

And that's the end of the fight!
Akihiro Gomi showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Gomi has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
