PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Island Striker One (ranked 2950 p4p, 4403 weight class) and John Henry (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Island Striker One!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 1, fighting out of The Island, John Henry!
The judges for this bout are David Hoff, Daniel Franklin and Bart Greer.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A jab lands there for Henry.
Henry throws a leg kick but he was too far away and it doesn't land.
One lands a head kick. Henry smiles back at him and beckons him forward.
Henry clobbers One with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
Henry looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.

One bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
One tries to advance to mount but can't.
You can see the frustration on Henry's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
One tries to stand but Henry is controlling his head.
Henry is trying to control One's posture but One avoids it.

That's one minute gone in the round.
One scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Henry to see if he's OK.

One decides to stand back up. One steps back and let's Henry get back to his feet.
Henry keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
One lands a nice leg kick that just misses Henry's sensitive parts.

One closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Henry to the mat! Henry manages to get full guard.

Henry is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. One is aware though and is defending well.
One looking to pass the guard.
One wants to control from the top but Henry keeps moving.

One stands up over Henry, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
One could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Henry tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Henry not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
One trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
One trying to control but Henry is working from the bottom.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Henry uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from One.
Henry throws a counter combo.
One stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and One wants it to stay on the feet.

One shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Henry manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
One slips nicely into half guard.

Henry tries to get to full guard but One has control of the leg.
One works his way into side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
One wants to stand but Henry has his arm trapped.
Henry is not content to let One control the position.
One is breathing heavily.
Henry on the wrong end of some ground and pound.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Henry is trying to get back to half guard.
Henry is trying to control One's posture but One avoids it.

One is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Henry is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Henry manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Henry moves into the clinch successfully.
One throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Henry blocks it with crossed arms.
One tries to break the clinch but Henry is controlling the position.
Henry jumps guard but One stands there with Henry around his waist. Henry gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Henry with the Thai clinch, lands a knee to the head.

It looks like Island Striker One has been cut.

Henry breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Henry keeps the fight in the clinch, despite One's efforts to push away.

Henry shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has One pinned against the cage. One gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Henry shoots in looking for a takedown but One manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Henry's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Island Striker One has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of John Henry.

Henry rushes One and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
One changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Henry fights it off and pushes away nicely.
One misses with a takedown
and Henry counters with a left to the body.
One misses with a head kick.
Island Striker One is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Henry shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says One as he avoids it easily.
One throws a lazy head kick
and Henry makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
One scores with a leg kick.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Henry.

Henry shoots in and drives through. One sprawls well.
One seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter.
One misses the jab.
One blocks a low kick nicely.
Henry shoots in and drives through. One sprawls well.
One stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Henry.
One fails with a takedown attempt.
Henry shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as One sprawls well. One wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Henry gets slowly back to his feet.

One shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Henry defends it nicely.
Henry drops down looking to force a counter takedown but One defends it well.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Henry has One pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Henry pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending One tumbling to the mat - Henry dives into One's guard.

John Henry showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The cut man is working on Island Striker One's cut.
That's time! Back to the action! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!

One with the Thai clinch. He's looking to land a big knee but he's not managed it this time.
Henry tries to pull guard but One holds him up against the cage and eventually Henry drops back down to his feet.
One fails to land with a short punch on the inside.
One prevents a takedown attempt there.
Henry is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Island Striker One has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of John Henry.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Henry can't get the takedown.
One has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
One tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Henry's elbow.
One is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.

Henry breaks from the clinch.
Henry misses with a head kick.
One takes a kick to the side of the head.
Henry takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

One throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Henry tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. One is in Henry's guard.
One wants to control from the top but Henry keeps moving.
One lands a couple of digs.
Henry looking to control.

Henry wants to control the position but One says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard.
Henry controlling the position for now.
Henry is staying active underneath One, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
John Henry seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Henry keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.
Henry swats away the attempt to clinch by One.
Henry shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has One pinned against the cage. One gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Henry lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt.
Henry throws a leg kick that is checked

and One counters with a nice double leg into side control. Henry won't be happy with that.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
One working the ground and pound.
Henry wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!
Henry is not content to let One control the position.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
One is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Henry is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Island Striker One.
I think One has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
