PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Albert Round (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alvin York (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Round's entrance music is Candy Paint. A fine choice. York has chosen No More Sorrow as his entrance music. I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Albert Round!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Alvin York!
The judges for this bout are Stewart Dunkirk, Robert Twigg and Frank Dennis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Round darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Round wants to free his trapped foot but York is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Round is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if York can do anything to dispel that myth.
York is trying to control but can't.
Round seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but York does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Round working the head and body with strikes.
York really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Round. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
York is trying to control but can't.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Round tries for a takedown but York sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Round jumps guard and drags York to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
York is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

York has his foot on Round's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Round works his way back into a safe position though.

York working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Round doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Round manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
York looks gassed!

York looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Round passes York's left leg - he's now in half guard.
York tries to get to full guard but Round has control of the leg.
Round perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Round has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Round is keen to just control but York is a slippery customer.
Round is really struggling to control York but he's trying to hold on to the position.

York is pressed up against the cage. Round has hold of a leg and is looking to drag York down to the mat. York avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.

York not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Round holds on and takes a little breather.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Round cracks York with a big right hand but York just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.

Round has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

Round escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. York gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
York must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

and Round counters with a nice leg kick.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
York shoots for a double leg takedown but Round sprawls well. He's pushed York's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Alvin York showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Round's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
York looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Round tries to clinch but York moves away

and York decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Round's guard.
York trying to control the position from guard on top but Round is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Round had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. York is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Round Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take York's back instead.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
York tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!

Round is landing with some decent strikes but York is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
Round cracks York with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.

Round throwing sloppy strikes, which aren't doing any damage.

York regains half guard.
Round lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
Round is thwarting York's attempts to control the position.
Round works his foot free and advances to mount.
Round throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for York because Round loaded up on that one.
Alvin York has got the better of the ground game so far.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
York is looking to improve his position but Round isn't that keen on the idea.
Round avoids the attempt from York to control.
BOOM! Round connects with a massive shot to the dome!
York wants to hold on but Round pushes him away.
Round tries to control but York wriggling away.

Round is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but York is surviving well by controlling Round's body position as best he can.
Round trying to control but York is having none of it.
Round lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Albert Round.
I think Round has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
