Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of New York, Joe Boxer! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Felix Rios! The judges for this bout are Anthony Taglia, Russell Pearce and Chad Campbell.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Boxer takes a nasty kick to the mid section... That should keep him thinking. Does he try and block and risk a head kick landing?
Boxer on the wrong end of a kick to the body.
Rios is looking to take this fight into the clinch. Boxer throws out a loose jab but Rios uses good head movement to avoid it. Rios pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Rios throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Boxer. Boxer misses with a low kick.
Boxer throws a jab but it's blocked by Rios. Joe Boxer seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Rios ducks under a wild hook from Boxer. Boxer throws a shot from downtown. Rios moves away and avoids it. Boxer moves into range and connects with a jab. Boxer gets in close and instigates a clinch. Rios changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Boxer fights it off and pushes away nicely.
Rios uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Boxer. Rios gets in close and instigates a clinch. Rios is looking to break free of the clinch but Boxer has double underhooks. Rios pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. Boxer gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Rios wants to control from the top but Boxer keeps moving. Boxer throws some sloppy strikes off his back.
That's one minute gone in the round. Boxer not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Rios trying to control but Boxer is working from the bottom. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Boxer is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far. Rios trying to control the position from guard on top but Boxer is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Rios content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots. Boxer trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage.
Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. Boxer stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush. Boxer rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Rios moves out of range and avoids them all easily. Rios throws a sloppy head kick and Boxer moves out of range easily. A swing and a miss from Boxer. Rios is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Boxer's half guard. Boxer wants to get back to his feet.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Boxer connecting with a few gentle strikes. Boxer is looking to control Rios's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Boxer avoid being mounted? Boxer is staying active underneath Rios, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Boxer wants to get back to full guard. Boxer is trying to stand back up but Rios is controlling him
Rios wants to free his trapped foot but Boxer is holding on for dear life with his legs. Rios not throwing his punches with enough precision this time. Boxer knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Rios on the ground.
Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. Boxer throws out a loose jab but Rios uses good head movement to avoid it. Boxer throws a hook but Rios avoids it easily. Rios forces Boxer back against the cage and clinches. Rios breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Rios looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Boxer! Rios trying to control but Boxer is having none of it.
That's three minutes gone in the round. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Boxer throwing punches from his back but nothing is landing. Rios controlling from mount. Boxer tries to hold on but Rios pushes him away. Rios controlling the pace for now. Rios landing strikes from the mount and Boxer is in trouble! Boxer tries to lock up and control but Rios gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. Boxer prevents Rios from taking his back. A nice elbow there by Rios.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Rios connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
Boxer trying desperately to get to his feet.
Rios takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though. Rios blocks Boxer's feeble attempts to strike from the bottom. Rios working for a submission but Boxer is keeping him at bay. Rios looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Rios is working for a guillotine from mount but Boxer frees his head quite easily.
Rios looks gassed! Boxer really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Felix Rios dominated that round. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.
Boxer throws a looping overhand right but Rios ducks down to avoid it. A slapping body kick lands there for Rios. Boxer dips to his left and cracks Rios with an uppercut! A chopping leg kick lands by Rios. Rios throws a leg kick which misses Boxer's front leg but catches the back leg as Boxer tries to avoid it. Boxer cracks Rios with a big right hand and Rios goes down!
Rios is rocked! Boxer has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Rios keeping moving, preventing Boxer from controlling successfully. Rios is still in real trouble! Can Boxer finish him? Rios looking for subs off his back but Boxer has passed one foot through into half guard.
Boxer lands with a punch from half guard. Rios seems to have recovered his senses. Rios tries to get to full guard but Boxer has control of the leg. Rios is refusing to be controlled, as Boxer sits in half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Boxer not landing any meaningful shots this time. Rios is looking for a sweep. Boxer is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Boxer frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount. Rios tries to hold on but Boxer pushes him away. Rios is desperately trying to improve his position but Boxer has a good base and remains in mount. Boxer cracks Rios with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Rios is in all sorts of trouble here.
Rios wants to control but Boxer is having none of it. Boxer with shots to the head and body - Rios looks very uncomfortable down there. Boxer controlling from mount.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Rios tries to hold on but Boxer pushes him away. Boxer punishing his opponent with strikes. Boxer trying to control but Rios is having none of it. Rios is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Rios is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. Rios is writhing around trying to get back to his feet. Rios is breathing heavily. Rios really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Boxer wants to control the pace but Rios is squirming around nicely. Boxer working away from the top, dropping strikes. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Boxer lands a big elbow. Boxer thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage. Boxer scoring with strikes but Rios is staying in there. Rios tries to lock up and control but Boxer gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. Boxer trying to control but Rios is having none of it. Rios is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Rios tries to reverse the position but Boxer maintains control. Boxer is in the full mount, landing strikes. Boxer trying to control but he's not successful this time. Rios is working to get back to half guard.
Rios tries to lock up and control but Boxer gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. Rios is looking to improve his position but Boxer isn't that keen on the idea. Boxer sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment. Rios in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Joe Boxer dominated that second round. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.
Rios bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes. Rios moves away from the strike by Boxer. Boxer throws a big shot that misses. Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Boxer, as that shot connected.
Rios avoids a lazy jab quite easily. Rios lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Boxer circles away quickly and effectively. Rios is looking to clinch but Boxer is avoiding it.
Boxer avoids the head kick by Rios.
Rios buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Felix Rios is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Rios lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt. Rios misses with a head kick.
Boxer looks to throw the jab but Rios is out of range. Boxer throws a lazy right hand but Rios sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily. Boxer misses with a looping left. Boxer blocks a head kick by Rios.
The fighters circling - Boxer throws out the jab but it was never going to land. Boxer pushing out the jab but it's not landing. Boxer takes a head kick and shrugs it off.
Boxer stuffs the takedown attempt from Rios. Rios gets slowly back to his feet. Boxer gets caught flat footed, as Rios shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Rios throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Rios accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Rios takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired. Rios trying to control but Boxer is working from the bottom. Boxer is looking to stand up but Rios isn't so interested in that idea. Rios pushes down on Boxer's leg and manages to get into half guard. Rios is thwarting Boxer's attempts to control the position. Rios prevents Boxer from standing back up.
Boxer landing strikes from the bottom.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Boxer lands with an uppercut that bounces Rios off the cage and back into rage. Boxer is really head hunting here, hardly looking to strike to the body at all. Rios misses with a wild combination.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Boxer misses with an uppercut. Rios saw that one coming. Boxer misses with a hook. Rios ducked under it nicely. Boxer missing with a left hand there. Rios was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one. Boxer blocks a head kick by Rios.
Boxer looks to land a left hand but Rios moved out of range nicely. Joe Boxer is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Rios steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Boxer. Rios lands a kick to the ribs of his opponent. Nice work there - in and out in a flash.
Rios moves out of range of the strikes. Rios throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Boxer. Rios throws a head kick but Boxer moves out of range.
Boxer thows a left - swing and a miss! Boxer takes a kick to the side of the head. The fight stays on the outside here - Rios looks like he's thinking about clinching though. Rios ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face. Rios throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Rios moves into the clinch. Boxer wants to get back to striking at distance but Rios won't allow it.
Boxer lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Boxer scores with a nice hook to the head. Rios changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Boxer fights it off and pushes away nicely.
Boxer lands a head shot. Rios changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Boxer looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better. Boxer is trying to buck Rios off. Rios misses with the ground and pound. Rios with the ground and pound but Boxer regains half guard under the barage of strikes. Rios trying to control the action but Boxer is working from the bottom. Rios is thwarting Boxer's attempts to control the position. Rios is looking to advance position but Boxer won't allow it.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Boxer trying to control but Rios postures up.
Rios is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Boxer cracks Rios with a right hand to the side of the head. The fighters circling - Boxer throws out the jab but it was never going to land. A slow jab from Boxer misses its intended target. Rios slips a jab from Boxer. Rios moves away from the strike by Boxer. Excellent takedown into side control there by Rios. Boxer is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Rios has just dragged him back down to the mat.
And that's the end of the fight! I would just about give that final round to Felix Rios. I think Rios has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
