CWC 338 PBP Commentary |
This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the lightweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of New York, with a TWGC record of 42 wins and 14 losses; John Lee! And in the blue corner, fighting out of London, with a TWGC record of 39 wins and 35 losses; Able Archer! The judges for this bout are Ryoma Takatsuka, Colin Fray and Jeff Smith.
The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Lee has taken the fight to the clinch.
Lee drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Lee gets a trip takedown into half guard. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Lee (2) vs (0) Archer Lee is taking a breather. Archer says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something. Archer makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Archer. Archer can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Lee controls the pace. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Lee won't allow Archer to sweep him here. Archer wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
That's one minute gone in the round. Lee is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions. Archer is pulling down on Lee's head. It's preventing any offense from Lee, at least for the moment. Lee postures up.

That's two minutes gone in the round. Archer working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Lee doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Lee manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Archer wants to sweep here but Lee controlling him for the moment. Lee trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Lee pushing down on Archer's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Lee with a momentary lay and pray from half guard. Archer is looking for a sweep. Lee is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Archer is trying to maintain the position but Lee is very close to passing his half guard. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. Archer looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Lee wants to pass to mount but Archer is defending the position. Archer is trying to maintain the position but Lee is very close to passing his half guard. Still in half guard, Lee seems content to control. Archer is trying to get back to full guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Archer is squirming around, avoiding Lee's attempts to control the action. That's seven minutes gone in the round. Lee controls Archer momentarily but Archer frees himself. Archer wants to control from the top but Lee keeps moving. Archer looking to pass the guard. Archer forces his way into half guard. Archer is working for a submission of some sort.
That's eight minutes gone in the round. Lee is refusing to be controlled, as Archer sits in half guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Lee tries to get to full guard but Archer has control of the leg. Lee is not content to let Archer control the position. Archer looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
That's nine minutes gone in the round. Archer is keen to just control but Lee is a slippery customer. Lee tries to roll over but Archer keeps him under control. Archer wants to free his trapped foot but Lee is holding on for dear life with his legs. Lee wants to get back to full guard.
That's ten minutes gone in the round. Archer wants to take a breather but Lee is having none of it. Lee is controlling Archer's trapped leg to prevent Archer from advancing to side control. Archer is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Lee is just riding it out for now. Archer eventually gives up the hold. Lee is in a tricky position but he's been working on his transitions down at SSJ Gym, so we'll see if he gets out of it. Lee keeping control of the position.
That's eleven minutes gone in the round. Lee is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Lee keeping control of the leg, stopping his opponent passing to mount. Lee regains full guard. Nicely done. Lee tries to land a sweep but no joy. Archer looking to pass the guard.
That's twelve minutes gone in the round. Archer passes easily into side control. Nice work. Score +3 for passing guard: Lee (5) vs (5) Archer Archer trying to control the position but Lee is working away. Archer thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead. Archer wants to control but Lee is keeping him busy. Archer is trying to get an arm triangle but Lee is defending well.
That's thirteen minutes gone in the round. Archer advances to mount. Score +2 for reaching mount: Lee (5) vs (7) Archer Lee tries to hold on but Archer pushes him away. Archer can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Lee is looking to escape. Lee is looking to get to half guard. Archer goes for an armbar but Lee turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Lee. Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Lee (7) vs (7) Archer
That's fourteen minutes gone in the round. Lee trying to control but Archer is working from the bottom. Archer wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Lee is now in half guard. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Archer is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
And that's the end of the fight! As we have tied on points, we go to a tie breaker and Archer gets a bonus point for attempting more subs. Archer wins on points by 8 to 7. Able Archer is the new lightweight champion! A very excited looking Able Archer made sure he remembered to thank all the fans both in the arena and on the internet. He said all the coolest people spend all day on MMA websites, which got a big reaction. |
