PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Chris Frint (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tom Gavin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Tom Gavin has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Chris Frint!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Tom Gavin!
The judges for this bout are Chad Campbell, Steve Montenegro and Jonathan Paton.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gavin takes a push kick to the midsection and stumbles backwards.
Frint lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!
An inside leg kick lands from Frint.
Gavin looks for a takedown but Frint sprawls well.
Frint tries to close the distance and clinch up but Gavin swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Gavin bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Gavin throws a strike aimed at the side of Frint's head but Frint avoids it well.
Gavin working the ground and pound.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Gavin thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Frint is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Frint struggling a bit here.
Gavin works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.
Gavin throwing shots but missing, from side control.
Frint sneaks back into half guard.
Gavin blocks the strikes from Frint.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Frint throws a strike from the bottom that misses.
Frint keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Gavin scores with a couple of good hammerfists.

Gavin is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Gavin looks gassed!
Gavin is thwarting Frint's attempts to control the position.
Gavin thows a huge punch but Frint dodges it nicely.
Frint tries to get to full guard but Gavin has control of the leg.
Gavin has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Gavin is looking for a kimura here.

Gavin thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Frint has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Gavin is working away from the top position though.

Frint is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Gavin pulls his head out easily.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Frint wants to clinch.
Gavin dodges the punch combination from Frint.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
A punch combination from Frint misses.
Frint tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Chris Frint will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Gavin avoids a punch combination nicely.
Frint misses with a double jab.
Frint misses with a takedown

and Gavin counters with a shoot takedown. Frint fights it but they end up in guard.
Gavin tries to free his leg and advance position but Frint is retaining full guard.
Frint preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Gavin keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Frint's head.

Gavin chips away with some ground and pound.
Gavin scoring with punches to the head and body.
Gavin throwing strikes but missing.
Frint keeping full guard, as Gavin tries to pass.
Gavin passes Frint's left leg - he's now in half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Frint has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Gavin is working away from the top position though.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Gavin drops an elbow to the side of Frint's head.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Gavin working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Gavin looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Frint with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Frint is defending against the submission attempts here by Gavin.

Frint moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Frint striking off his back, scoring a few points.
Gavin working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound.

Gavin throwing strikes from guard but Frint blocks nicely.
Gavin throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Frint works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Gavin postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.

Gavin postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Frint is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Gavin, into his guard.
Gavin keeping moving, preventing Frint from controlling successfully.
Gavin doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Gavin wants to sweep but no luck.
Frint will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Gavin working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Frint doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Frint manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Gavin wants to sweep but no luck.
Frint stands up over Gavin, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Gavin is looking to sweep but instead, Frint has passed into half guard.
Gavin avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Frint.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Frint rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Gavin moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tom Gavin showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!


Gavin walks into a left hand.
Frint tries to clinch up.
Frint looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Gavin showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Frint.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gavin shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Gavin avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

and Frint counters with a three punch combo that has Gavin backing up. Gavin nods at Frint to acknowledge the strikes.
Gavin takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Frint gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Gavin counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Gavin seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Gavin is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
BOOM! Gavin connects with a massive shot to the dome!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The referee warns Frint that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
Gavin has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Frint's face.
Frint tries to hold on but Gavin postures up.
Gavin lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Gavin with a couple of short strikes.
Frint is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

Gavin goes for an armbar but Frint turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Frint.

Frint gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

Gavin closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Frint did well to prevent Gavin getting side control.

The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Gavin lands a nice short elbow.

Tom Gavin comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Gavin has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
