Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Julio Souza! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Mark Evans! The judges for this bout are Cecil Peabody, George Francis and Daniel Franklin.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Souza swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Evans bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control. Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! Evans tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Evans has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought! Souza is trying to get back to his feet. Evans throws an elbow but Souza slips to the side and avoids it well. Souza is not in a great position here, taking some shots. Evans is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Souza has escaped the position, nice work there. Evans throwing strikes but missing, from side control. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Evans scoring with punches from side control. Souza on the wrong end of some ground and pound. Souza is not content to let Evans control the position. Evans looks gassed! Evans tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though. Souza is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Evans has just dragged him back down to the mat.
That's one minute gone in the round. Evans is trying to get an arm triangle but Souza is defending well. Souza pushes Evans away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Evans gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Evans swats away the attempt to clinch by Souza. Julio Souza seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Evans avoids a punch combination nicely.

Wow, both these guys are really going for it! Evans changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Souza looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better. Souza gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there! Evans punishing his opponent with strikes.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Evans raining down shots from the mount! Souza is trying to escape but when you're mounted that's not too easy.
Evans is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Souza has managed to escape the submission attempt.

Evans postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Souza looks a forlorn figure.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Evans controlling his opponent. Evans unloading with bombs! Evans takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though. Evans dominating with strikes here. Evans sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment. Souza is not a happy chappy… he wants out of there.
Evans raining down shots from the mount! Evans is going olschool here, as he tries to force Souza to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Souza shrugs it off. Souza is squirming around, avoiding Evans's attempts to control the action.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Souza is really trying hard to get back to his feet.
Souza defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Evans. Evans tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position. Evans looking for a guillotine from mount but Souza is having none of it. Evans working for a submission but Souza is keeping him at bay. Evans looking to secure an arm triangle but Souza defends it well. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Mark Evans dominated that round. The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!
Evans gets the takedown into side control. Souza stops Evans from passing to mount. Souza is not content to let Evans control the position. Evans is trying to get an arm triangle but Souza is defending well. Souza wants to get back to his feet. Evans wants to control but Souza is keeping him busy. Souza is looking to get back to his feet here but Evans is keeping cool and he's managed to take Souza's back. Souza won't enjoy being in this position. Evans looking for the choke. Oh... he's slipped the arm under the neck - Souza is tapping - it's over boys! Evans picks up the submission victory!
