PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jean Lafitte (ranked 24577 p4p, 4051 weight class) and Ivan Kovalchuck (ranked 262 p4p, 135 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jean Lafitte!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Ivan Kovalchuck!
The judges for this bout are Bruno Lombardi, Eddie Farnsworth and David Schapiro.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Lafitte with a hook.

It looks like Ivan Kovalchuck has been cut.
Kovalchuck drops his hands momentarily and Lafitte takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.

Lafitte throws a big overhand right that connects, sending Kovalchuck tumbling to the canvas!

Kovalchuck is rocked!
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Lafitte wanted to stand there but Kovalchuck had control of the position.
Kovalchuck is still in real trouble! Can Lafitte finish him?
Lafitte is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Kovalchuck seems to have recovered his senses.
Lafitte won't allow Kovalchuck to sweep him here.
Lafitte tries to stand but Kovalchuck is controlling from the bottom.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Kovalchuck can do anything to dispel that myth.
Kovalchuck is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Lafitte sitting in guard, not really doing much.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Lafitte wants to stand but Kovalchuck is controlling his posture from full guard.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.

We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Kovalchuck has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.
Lafitte lands a nice shot that snaps Kovalchuck's head back.

That has opened up Ivan Kovalchuck's cut even more.
Lafitte misses with a hook. Kovalchuck ducked under it nicely.

Lafitte bobbing and weaving well here. And he's unloaded with a massive right hand that drops Kovalchuck! He dives into his guard looking to finish!

The cut above Ivan Kovalchuck's eye is starting to cause him problems now.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Lafitte has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Kovalchuck is proving hard to escape from.
Lafitte is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Lafitte decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Lafitte looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.

Lafitte cracks Kovalchuck with an uppercut from hell and Kovalchuck crumples to the canvas, he's out! Oh no, he's recovered and he's grabbed one of Lafitte's legs and pulled him into guard. The ref thought about stopping it there but he's let it go - good reffing!

Kovalchuck tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Kovalchuck is working an open guard so Lafitte takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Lafitte scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.
Kovalchuck looks winded!

Lafitte waves his right hand out in front of him, looking to distract Kovalchuck. Oh, he's unloaded a beast of a left hand - it worked! He's dropped Kovalchuck to the canvas! Can he finish him!?

Ivan Kovalchuck's cut is absolute horrible now. This looks like something out of a horror film with blood covering both fighters.

The referee calls the doctor in to look at Ivan Kovalchuck's cut. Oh no, the doctor has called an end to the bout!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:51 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Cut). Jean Lafitte!
