PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Tre Jokinen (ranked 2415 p4p, 2842 weight class) and Kaven May Jr (ranked 297 p4p, 342 weight class). May Jr has chosen HonestKey- Self Discovery as his entrance music. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Tre Jokinen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Kaven May Jr!
The judges for this bout are Alec Ball, Yves DeLean and Elvis Blanc.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A nice leg kick from May Jr, right into the meat of the thigh.
May Jr throws a nice outside leg kick.
Nice straight punches there by May Jr. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of May Jr.
Jokinen swings and misses with a hook to the body.
May Jr paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.
May Jr fakes a jab and throws a low kick but Jokinen checks it well.
May Jr throws a leg kick which misses Jokinen's front leg but catches the back leg as Jokinen tries to avoid it.
A low kick from May Jr is predictable there

and Jokinen counters with a takedown into side control.
May Jr looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.

Jokinen tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Jokinen has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
May Jr wants to control but Jokinen postures up.
May Jr might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Jokinen haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

Jokinen scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at May Jr to see if he's OK.

Jokinen wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by May Jr, who protects the arm well.
May Jr is trying to control Jokinen's posture but Jokinen avoids it.
We've been hearing that Jokinen has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish.

Jokinen is looking to take a break and control but May Jr is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
May Jr takes a swing at Jokinen's ribcage but misses.
An attempted straight right counter from Jokinen misses the target.
Jokinen walks into a jab.
Jokinen swings and misses with a hook to the body.
May Jr throws a leg kick which misses Jokinen's front leg but catches the back leg as Jokinen tries to avoid it.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Kaven May Jr seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
May Jr pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
May Jr defending well as Jokinen loads up on a big left hand.
May Jr appears to be waiting to throw a counter punch to the body.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Tre Jokinen will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

Sloppy strikes from Jokinen. Those never looked like landing.

and Jokinen counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Jokinen looking to sit in guard and control but May Jr gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

May Jr is looking to stand up but Jokinen won't let him.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Jokinen got a little sloppy there for a moment and May Jr has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Jokinen has managed to get both his arms back between May Jr's legs - danger averted.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Jokinen content to control rather than advance.
Jokinen working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Jokinen is thwarting May Jr's attempts to control the position.
May Jr is trying to get back to full guard.
Jokinen is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that May Jr can do to turn this around?
Jokinen seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

Jokinen is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.

Jokinen is working for a kimura but May Jr is defending it quite comfortably.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Jokinen is keen to just control but May Jr is a slippery customer.
Jokinen is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because May Jr is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
May Jr trying to control here.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Jokinen throws a lazy uppercut
and May Jr counters with a right hand to the body.
May Jr pulls out of a head kick attempt.
May Jr moves out of range as Jokinen strikes.
Jokinen takes a body punch but keeps moving.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
May Jr feints and then cracks Jokinen's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Jokinen down.
May Jr lands a body shot.
Jokinen tests May Jr's chin there with a solid looking shot.
May Jr looks to land a body kick but Jokinen moved away.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Tre Jokinen dominated that second round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!

Jokinen throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around May Jr's waist but May Jr gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Jokinen off to one side.
Jokinen misses with a hook. May Jr ducked under it nicely.
A nice leg kick lands there from May Jr.
May Jr does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
Jokinen half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.
Jokinen keeping at a good range here, avoiding a leg kick.
May Jr throws a low kick, looking for Jokinen's leg but Jokinen calmly moves out of range.
A quick step to the side and Jokinen tries to counter with a shot to the body but it doesn't connect.
Jokinen doesn't succeed with the takedown
and May Jr counters with a three punch combo that has Jokinen backing up. Jokinen nods at May Jr to acknowledge the strikes.
Jokinen shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.
Jokinen looks to land a left hand but May Jr moved out of range nicely.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
May Jr's corner calls for a 1-2. May Jr obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
May Jr thumps Jokinen with a low kick.
Jokinen throws a poor cross that misses
and May Jr finishes the little exchange by landing a big kick to the body.
May Jr pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Jokinen was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.

May Jr dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Jokinen. That did some damage!
Jokinen throws a hook but May Jr avoids it easily.
May Jr goes for a high kick. It partially lands.
May Jr defending well as Jokinen loads up on a big left hand.
May Jr pulls out of a head kick attempt.
May Jr takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
Jokinen is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by May Jr.
Jokinen misses with a looping right.
May Jr lets loose with a powerful body kick. Jokinen will feel that in the morning.
May Jr lands a high kick!
Kaven May Jr is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
May Jr tests Jokinen's chin there with a solid looking shot.

Jokinen looking to score a takedown here. May Jr is defending well but Jokinen drives through and ends up in May Jr's guard.

May Jr is wriggling around but Jokinen manages to pass to half guard.
Jokinen with the ground and pound but May Jr uses the opportunity to regain guard.

Jokinen controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Jokinen wants to control from the top but May Jr keeps moving.
Tre Jokinen overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

May Jr has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Jokinen is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for May Jr.
May Jr parries the strikes from Jokinen easily there. Jokinen is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable May Jr to escape.
Tre Jokinen is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
May Jr being controlled for a moment.
Kaven May Jr has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
May Jr tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Jokinen wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
May Jr prevents Jokinen from moving into mount.
Jokinen happy to just control the position for now.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

And that's the end of the fight!
Kaven May Jr comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Jokinen has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
