PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Ammad Ominateu (ranked 5750 p4p, 2017 weight class) and Joe McConnell (ranked 236 p4p, 103 weight class). Ominateu's entrance music is Top G. A fine choice. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Ominateu closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Ominateu lands in his opponent's guard.
McConnell working a defensive guard here.
Ominateu is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Ominateu makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Ominateu stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. McConnell swivels though and keeps the full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Ominateu works a leg free and moves into half guard.

Ominateu seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down McConnell for as long as he can get away with.

Well, if Ominateu is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
McConnell is trying to control but can't.

McConnell really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Ominateu. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Ominateu lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.

McConnell is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

McConnell is bucking up trying to escape but Ominateu cracks him with another couple of good strikes.
McConnell is in all sorts of trouble here.
McConnell wants to hold on but Ominateu pushes him away.
McConnell is desperately trying to improve his position but Ominateu has a good base and remains in mount.
Ominateu lands a couple of good shots and McConnell has given up his back, trying to escape the position!
I would not like to be McConnell right now.
McConnell grimaces as he takes a shot to the body.
McConnell is being controlled on the ground here - he must escape this position otherwise surely the end is near.

McConnell tries to break free.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Ominateu controlling the position well here. McConnell rolled but Ominateu kept the hooks locked in and stayed in the dominant position.
Ominateu is throwing punches to the body, looking to soften McConnell up.
Ominateu has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
McConnell wants to escape the position.
McConnell looks to control his opponent's hands but he's not mananging it at the moment.

Ominateu shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with McConnell but McConnell pushes him off and we're back to square one.
A little jabbing left from McConnell on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.

and McConnell counters with a stiff right hand.

Ammad Ominateu seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

I was talking to Ominateu's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Ammad Ominateu's cut is bleeding quite badly. He's got to try and protect it.

Oh Ominateu is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
McConnell dips a shoulder and cracks Ominateu with a mighty uppercut! Ominateu falls back against the cage and McConnell unloads with a barrage of strikes! Ominateu is completely out with his eyes open, only supported by the cage! Save him ref! Eventually the ref decides to do his job and jumps in - McConnell screams abuse at the incompetent official before going over to celebrate with his corner. Brutal stuff!
