PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between David Oliviera (ranked 6308 p4p, 5283 weight class) and Quagmire Griffin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, David Oliviera!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Quagmire Griffin!
The judges for this bout are Luis Engracia, Daniel Cesar and Matheus Silva.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Oliviera gets caught flat footed, as Griffin shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Oliviera looks exhausted already! Oh dear, he should have come in in better shape than this!
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Griffin's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Griffin controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Griffin really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Oliviera. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
It looks like Griffin might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Griffin must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Griffin drops back looking for a leg! Oliviera is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Oliviera manages to kick Griffin off! Griffin jumps back into Oliviera's guard.

Griffin decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Oliviera, up you get!

Griffin fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Oliviera to the ground. Griffin is now in Oliviera's guard.
Griffin's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Griffin wants to stand but Oliviera is controlling his posture from full guard.
Griffin is working Oliviera over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Oliviera has momentary wrist control but Griffin slips an elbow through the middle.
Griffin slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Oliviera looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Griffin closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Griffin lands in his opponent's guard.

Griffin is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Oliviera working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Griffin doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Griffin manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Quagmire Griffin dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Oliviera tries a head kick but it misses.

Oliviera attempts a counter takedown but Griffin avoids it well and moves away.

Quagmire Griffin has got the better of the ground game so far.

Griffin stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Oliviera swivels though and keeps the full guard.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Griffin is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Griffin is continuing to stall.

Oliviera is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Griffin defends well.

Griffin prevents Oliviera from getting back to his feet.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Griffin has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Griffin tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Oliviera manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Griffin digs a good hook to Oliviera's body.
Griffin tries to close the distance and clinch up but Oliviera swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Griffin closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
You can see the frustration on Oliviera's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Oliviera takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.

Griffin stands up and beckons Oliviera to his feet.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Oliviera has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Griffin can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Quagmire Griffin showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

Griffin fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

Griffin gets a clinch.

Griffin has hold of one of Oliviera's legs. Oliviera is fighting the takedown attempt but Griffin gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Griffin not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Oliviera is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Griffin is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Oliviera looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Griffin thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Griffin with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Oliviera looking for a sweep. Not yet Oliviera, not yet.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

and Griffin counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.

Griffin shoots in and bounces Oliviera off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

Oliviera is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Oliviera is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Griffin is not content to let Oliviera control the position.
Griffin is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Oliviera seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Griffin does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Griffin is trying to get back to full guard.
Griffin misses with some strikes from the bottom.
Oliviera tries to pass the half guard into mount. Griffin knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Oliviera is keen to just control but Griffin is a slippery customer.
Oliviera thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Griffin's head.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Oliviera is looking for a kimura here.

Oliviera is trying to work for a kimura but Griffin is defending well.
Oliviera thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

And that's the end of the fight!
Quagmire Griffin comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Griffin has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
