This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the welterweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of New York, with a TWGC record of 18 wins and 23 losses; Kevin Walters! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Montreal, with a TWGC record of 59 wins and 42 losses; Rolf Ottke! The judges for this bout are Seu Braga, Luis Engracia and Mauricio Rocha.
The official calls the fighters to the middle and the contest is under way. Walters decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Walters (2) vs (0) Ottke Walters is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Ottke sees it coming and defends easily. Ottke tries to roll over but Walters keeps him under control. Walters trying to control the action but Ottke is working from the bottom. Ottke is positioning himself well to prevent Walters advancing to mount. Walters not doing much here.
Walters is thwarting Ottke's attempts to control the position. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Ottke is looking for a sweep. Walters is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Walters is pressing down on Ottke's thigh, looking to free his foot. Ottke is holding on for now.
That's one minute gone in the round. Walters is trying to control the action in half guard but Ottke is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Walters wants to free his trapped foot but Ottke is holding on for dear life with his legs. Walters controlling the action here. Ottke is staying active underneath Walters, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Walters seems to be looking for submissions.
Ottke won't allow Walters to pass to mount. Ottke is pressing down on Walters's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it. Ottke wants to sweep here but Walters controlling him for the moment. Ottke is adopting a defensive guard. Ottke being controlled here, momentarily.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Ottke throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Walters escapes and throws Ottke's legs to the side, diving into side control! Score +3 for passing guard: Walters (5) vs (0) Ottke Walters working away. Walters is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Ottke is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. Walters is staying tight to Ottke's torso, preventing him from escaping. Ottke sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Walters perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there. Ottke is trying to control but can't.
Walters keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action. Walters is looking to pass Ottke's guard but actually Ottke recovers to full guard. Walters stays in close to Ottke's body and controls the position. Walters trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Ottke is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Walters wants to control from the top but Ottke keeps moving. Ottke looking for a sweep. Not yet Ottke, not yet.
That's five minutes gone in the round. Walters trying to control the position from guard on top but Ottke is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Walters looking to pass the guard. Walters trying to control but Ottke is working from the bottom. Walters tries to free his leg and advance position but Ottke is retaining full guard. Walters not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up. Walters seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Ottke for as long as he can get away with. Ottke is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
