PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Carlos Machado (ranked 1556 p4p, 2202 weight class) and Tai Kina (ranked 218 p4p, 288 weight class). Well, I have no idea who's going to take this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Carlos Machado!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Tai Kina!
The judges for this bout are Ben Zyskovitsi, Tarja Halkonen and Marco Blurström.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kina shoots in for a takedown but Machado shows good takedown defense.
Kina defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Machado.

Machado shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Machado was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Machado goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Kina rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Machado's guard! Nice work there by Kina!

Kina sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Machado's guard.
Kina is stalling here. Machado is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Kina seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Machado has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.
Machado wants to control but Kina is keeping him busy.
Machado is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Kina is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Machado goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Kina has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Machado but great work by Kina.

Machado is looking for a sweep.
Machado is trying to control Kina's posture but Kina avoids it.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.

Machado looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.
Kina wants to stand but Machado is controlling his arm.

Machado tries to improve position but can't.
Kina is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Kina works to advance to full mount. Machado defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.
Machado slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.
Kina lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
We've been informed that Kina has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.
Machado won't allow Kina to pass to mount.

Machado is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Kina pulls his head out easily.

Machado keeps control of the position for the meantime.
Kina is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.

Kina looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Machado has hold of Kina's hands but Kina slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Kina working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Machado closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Kina quickly recovers to half guard.
Machado tries to pass the half guard into mount. Kina knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Machado is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Kina has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Kina is trying to control but can't.
Machado thows a huge punch but Kina dodges it nicely.

The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Kina won't allow Machado to pass to mount.
Machado is keen to just control but Kina is a slippery customer.

Machado is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Machado seems to be working for a kimura but Kina defends the submission attempt.
Tai Kina has got the better of the ground game so far.
Machado is thwarting Kina's attempts to control the position.

Kina wants to get back to full guard.

Machado is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Kina shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Machado pinned against the cage. Machado gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Kina throws a big shot that misses.
Machado wants to clinch.

Kina closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Kina prevents a takedown attempt there.
Machado drops down looking for an ankle pick but Kina pulls his leg out and moves away.
Kina pivots, looking for a leg kick but Machado is out of range and Kina settles back down.

Kina shoots in and gets a takedown into Machado's guard.
Kina postures up and lands a big shot to Machado's brow.
Kina connects with a couple of short punches.
Kina lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Machado is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Machado can't keep his opponent in guard - Kina advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Machado on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.

It looks like Carlos Machado has been cut.
Kina wants to lay and pray for a moment but Machado keeps working.
Kina is thwarting Machado's attempts to control the position.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Kina gets to his feet - back to striking we go!
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Tai Kina showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!

A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.

Kina tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Kina has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Kina looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Machado with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Kina is nestled in close to Machado, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Kina wants to free his trapped foot but Machado is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Kina working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Machado is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Kina's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Kina's back!

Machado has the rear naked choke here! This is very bad for Kina! Can he survive? No! He's out! Machado gets to his feet and celebrates with his cornermen. He looks absolutely delighted. In the post fight interviews he takes time to thank his parents and everyone who has believed in him from the start. How sweet.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:24 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Carlos Machado!
