Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Jari Nurmelainen! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Runen Svenson! The judges for this bout are Matti Vanhoillinen, Marco Blurström and Ben Zyskovitsi.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Nurmelainen closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth. Nurmelainen is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Svenson knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. Svenson pushes Nurmelainen away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Nurmelainen gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control. Svenson sneaks back into half guard. Svenson is looking for a sweep. Nurmelainen is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Nurmelainen is pressing down on Svenson's thigh, looking to free his foot. Svenson is holding on for now. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Nurmelainen is working hard here to advance position. Nurmelainen is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position. Svenson wants to get back to full guard. Nurmelainen wants to work for an arm triangle but Svenson is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Svenson wants to control but Nurmelainen is keeping busy and won't allow it.
That's one minute gone in the round. Nurmelainen seems to be looking for submissions.
Svenson is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Nurmelainen scores with a couple of nice shots. Nurmelainen prevents Svenson from improving his position. Svenson pushes Nurmelainen off looking to stand but Nurmelainen dives back in and keeps control.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Svenson shoots and misses and Nurmelainen counters with a shoot takedown into half guard. Svenson looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Nurmelainen is looking for a kimura but Svenson is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Nurmelainen to get the leverage. Nurmelainen is breathing heavily. Nurmelainen is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Nurmelainen prevents Svenson from improving his position.

Nurmelainen is working for a submission of some sort.
Svenson is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Nurmelainen pulls his head out easily. Nurmelainen tries to stand and escape but Svenson actually recovers to full guard. Svenson looking for a guillotine here but Nurmelainen defends easily.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Nurmelainen throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Svenson works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Svenson is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Nurmelainen thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Svenson has his foot on Nurmelainen's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Nurmelainen works his way back into a safe position though. Svenson can't keep his opponent in guard - Nurmelainen advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount. Nurmelainen decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Nurmelainen gets caught flat footed, as Svenson shoots in with a quick takedown into guard. Nurmelainen is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Nurmelainen pushes Svenson off and gets back to his feet.
Svenson doesn't succeed with the takedown and Nurmelainen counters with a nice double leg into guard. This has been an exciting period of action! Nurmelainen drops back for a leg here. A bit of a high risk move... He's looking for a kneebar by the looks of things. Now both of them are looking for submissions. Nurmelainen seems to have locked his on tight now - Svenson screams in pain and taps out furiously! It certainly was a high risk move but it's paid off for Nurmelainen, as he picks up the win!
