PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Justin Gavio (ranked 4403 p4p, 3059 weight class) and Chirs Davis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Justin Gavio!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Chirs Davis!
The judges for this bout are Jorge Garcia, Joseph Jones and Chad Campbell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
No luck with that takedown attempt from Davis.
Davis tries for a takedown but Gavio sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Gavio closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Davis quickly recovers to half guard.

Gavio seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Davis for as long as he can get away with.
Davis is trying to get back to full guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Davis won't allow Gavio to pass to mount.

Davis wants to control but Gavio is keeping busy.
Davis is looking for a sweep. Gavio is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Gavio looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Davis is trying to stand up here but Gavio is controlling him well.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Gavio throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Davis was covering up waiting for the punch and Gavio finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Gavio wanted to stand there but Davis had control of the position.
Davis thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.

Gavio tries to free his leg and advance position but Davis is retaining full guard.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Gavio shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Davis manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Gavio is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Gavio not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Gavio has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

Gavio throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Davis tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Gavio is in Davis's guard.

Davis is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Gavio defends well.
Justin Gavio overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Davis is looking for a triangle here but Gavio uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.

Gavio really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Gavio is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Davis can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.

Davis tries to lock up and control but Gavio gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Gavio takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Davis's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up.

Gavio is landing with some decent strikes but Davis is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Gavio jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Davis manages to avoid the submission attempt.

Davis manages to work his way to half guard, despite Gavio's best efforts.
Gavio is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

Davis is trying to stand.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Gavio fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Davis to the ground. Gavio is now in Davis's guard.

Davis takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Gavio continues to hold on tight.

Gavio winds up and cracks Davis with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Gavio looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Gavio is trying to work for a kimura but Davis is defending well.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.

Davis is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Gavio dives into side control.

Gavio takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Davis tries to lock up and control but Gavio gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Gavio working for a submission here. He's tucked his head under his opponent's arm, looking for an arm triangle. He's hopped off into side control, looking to tighten the submission... is it going to work? He's given up a good position looking for it. Davis looks OK. Oh, I spoke too soon, he's out! That must have been tighter than I thought! Excellent work there by Gavio! Submission of the night perhaps?
