This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the welterweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Las Vegas, with a TWGC record of 17 wins and 23 losses; Dragon Li Chai! And in the blue corner, fighting out of London, with a TWGC record of 15 wins and 16 losses; Helio Gracias! The judges for this bout are Thiago Cunha, Alexandre Firmino and Daniel Cesar.
The fighters connect hands in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Chai darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Chai (2) vs (0) Gracias Gracias wants to get back to full guard. Chai wants to free his trapped foot but Gracias is holding on for dear life with his legs. Gracias is refusing to be controlled, as Chai sits in half guard. Chai wants to pass to mount but Gracias is defending the position. Chai has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Gracias manages to get to full guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Gracias keeping moving, preventing Chai from controlling successfully.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gracias looking to hit a scissor sweep but Chai is one step ahead there. Chai advances to half guard. Gracias won't allow Chai to pass to mount. Chai moves nicely into side control. Score +3 for passing guard: Chai (5) vs (0) Gracias Gracias is not content to let Chai control the position. Chai advances to mount. Score +2 for reaching mount: Chai (7) vs (0) Gracias Chai swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Gracias is now in Chai's guard. A big mistake from Chai there, giving up the dominant position! Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Chai (7) vs (2) Gracias Chai might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Chai is trying to keep Gracias in close.
Chai is looking to cinch up a triangle. Gracias throws the leg off to one side though and gets in tight to Chai's body to avoid the submission. Chai has instead reached around Gracias's neck and now has a guillotine! Oh, this is biiiig trouble! Chai arches his back and squeezes and forces the tap from his hapless opponent.
